His ERA is 5 not 20.  That is almost double his season average.  The offense has been pretty good minus the 3 guys that are killing it.

That’s my point. Against his performance today, they should have at least 5-6 runs.

It's not about adjusting to hit for less power.   You should not be swinging for a home run in the first place.   You should be swinging to hit a hard line drive by keeping your bat somewhat level through the strike zone.  Home runs come more by hitting the lower half of the ball while hitting it hard,  than by trying to hit a home run.

I'm going to disagree with you and I think a lot of current players and management will agree with me.

A HR is a LOT more valuable than a line drive up the middle for a single.

Of course I'm not specifically talking about "swinging for a homerun" as if you were in a HR derby but I'm sure you realize that.

The problem is that the guys are always trying for home runs when a single is just fine. All those two-out fly outs would be better replaced by a nice line drive single.

Ichiro is going to be a first ballot 98% of the vote HOF and he’s got about 30 careerhome runs.

Like Cedric just did. A nice single. Probably a lucky one, but much better than a long fly out.

The question is:   if you optimize all your guys in the minors with the same approach, an approach which leads to more HRs and more strikeouts, from the day they join the system, what are the consequences:

   1) You probably have a team that hits a lot of HRs, which is good.   The aggregate OPS of your team will be optimized as much as possible.  Unquestionably a good thing.

But:

   2) Does it also create hi9tters who haven't learned how to adjust to the situation, shorten their swing when it is called for, against top flight pitching?

   3) Does it give opposing pitchers a blueprint of how to attack your team because they all have the same approach?
