Yankees on the verge of landing Lance Berkman!

This is just another reason why i'm growing sick of this game that I love more and more every year. It's not fair and 26 or 27 other teams have to compete with 1 arm tied behind their back.

People will throw out the argument that it doesn't guarantee wins, that there have been several different WS winners the past 10 years. That's complete BS. The bottom line is, it's really not fair one bit and the playing field still isn't level, even after the "elimination" of PED's.

Life isn't fair either, and this is nothing new in baseball.

When the modern Orioles rejoined the American League in 1954, for example, the Yankees were in the midst of winning the pennant 15 times in 18 years.

You wanna be the best, you gotta beat the best. And it'll be that much sweeter when it happens.

Absolutely, preach on Brother Howdy. Everyone cried when the Yankees were going get Lee, everyone cried when they were going to get Haren ("it's so unfair, blah blah blah), they didn't. You knew they'd make a few moves (as all contenders do), and they did (like they are supposed to).

In the mid 90s, the Orioles got players at the deadline to help them try to win (Ziele, Inky, Berroa, Bonilla..etc), it's what happens this time of year EVERY YEAR, yet it's only a "problem", or "unfair" if the Yankees do it? Really?

There's nothing new about this. Ever since Babe Ruth, the MFY's have had an incredible advantage over everybody else. That's why MLB spent about 50 years with about 80% of the WS being between the MFY's and whoever the NL sent. The only thing that's new is the details, and that's about the money. Back when the O's were good all the time, they did it on about half of the MFY's payroll, which is a level we can operate on even in these times of insane-money...

Yes, it's not a problem or unfair that the Yankees try to get pieces to make a pennant run. But it is apples and hand grenades comparing making a comparison to the Orioles of the mid 90s who even as big spenders still had to keep their payroll in the same hemisphere as the other big spenders and the Yankees of today who have no constraints at all.

Understood, but making a trade to help your team down the stretch is commonplace. No need for anyone to moan and groan when the Yankees do it any more than the Phillies, Dodgers, or Rangers.

Over past 2 days Yankees add Berkman, Wood, Kearns and roughly $5.3M to payroll for 2 prospects not in their top 10. That's good, smart Baseball decisions, nothing more.
