Hey Tony it might be good to sticky this thread in the Hangout Club as well. I know there are some posters who don't exactly frequent this section of the board as much as the Hangout Club. Just a suggestion...

Go OH!....Is our arch-nemesis truly Camden Chat now? If so, DESTROY THE ARCH-NEMESIS! :mwahaha:

Also, have we figured out yet if one vote is really all that counts a day? Because I just voted about 30 times...

Well it took me 16 tries (literally) but I finally got registered with the Sun. Yeesh. It's easier to vote for the President.

Anyways, I've voted and will continue to do so. Too bad we can only vote once a day or I'd spend half the night getting us back into first.

Rumor is that the one vote thing is not true. Keep voting!

This thread is hilarious. Tony and Scottie campaigning for votes, acting like it's really important, the whole Stacey shenanigans and both sides acting like it's really not a big deal when 48 hours ago all parties involved were acting like it was.

What are you getting at exactly?

It was a lot of fun. It was good publicity. I took some pride in the fact that two blogs with no ties to traditional media outlets were beating those who did.

And outside of "Hey, make sure you vote for us!", I'm not exactly sure where we made it sound like it was really important. If that's how you read it, than cool, but I can tell you Tony and I don't put much stock in an oddly constructed, questionable popularity poll. Our web traffic and number of registered users is all I need to know that what we do here at the Orioles Hangout is unparalleled on the web. There's no bigger or better combination of O''s big league and minor league information and discussion in Baltimore than right here. As a matter of fact, I'd put us up against any similar website in all of professional sports. NO ONE has the access that we do that allows us to provide the level of in-depth coverage, analysis, and facilitate intelligent discussion like the Orioles Hangout. Feel free to label me cocky and arrogant, but I'm sorry...no one else comes close.

As far as the Mobbies are concerned, it only became somewhat of a big deal when the Sun told us we were nominated, we threw some traffic their way by linking to the voting site, and then we were unfairly and inexplicably yanked from contention. Once the wrong was righted, we were seriously having some fun with it.

Now that it's taken the spin that it has, I regret talking Tony into pushing to get us reinstated as a nominee.

Not getting at anything, just saying that the turn of events here has been pretty funny. Both sides garnering for votes and then trying to play it off like it was no big deal in the first place.

You're not sure where you made it sound important in the first place? Well, making this thread a sticky at the top of the most visited section of the board is a starting point. And if Tony doesn't put stock into it, why'd he lobby to get back onto the poll? Why'd you make a lengthy post justifying to the very members of the board that you guys are indeed worthy of being considered a blog?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with everything you say about the OH being the best. I voted because I'm a big fan of the site and genuinely believe that you are the best. It's no secret that I spend way too much time on here.

I also believe you when you say you were having fun. Isn't competition fun?

Stickying a thread? It's one click. It's not really a big deal. "Lobbying for votes" as you put it...it was fun. We'd already posted what amounted to free advertising for The Sun here, on Facebook, and on Twitter. I already explained why we lobbied to get back into the contest...that's why we lobbied to get back in. That more than anything made it important based on principle.

The lengthy post as to why we should be considered was a response to the nominee that went whining to the powers-that-be at the Baltimore Sun about how it was unfair that we were nominated.

My outlook on the Mobbies hasn't changed from day one. I can understand how you might read it the way you did, but you're wrong.

UPDATE: Orioles Hangout is gaining on us. They're floating a rumor that you're not limited to one vote a day. Do with that information what you will, but they have a pink up arrow today and we have a black down arrow. We're counting on you guys! GO VOTE! And make sure it's for Best Orioles Blog, not just Best Overall Blog.

Go vote like your life depends on it!

REMEMBER

Tony's Take for best overall

Tony's Take for best ORIOLE

Chris Stoner for Best Terps

Straight PARTY Ticket.

    • You could. But I think that's harder because every player has their own bat they like. Bats aren't, and haven't ever been, subject to the same kind of requirements balls are. The ball is a very specific size and weight and COR, etc. The rules about the bats are basically that they can't be longer than X (something crazy like 48", which nobody has used in a century+), or heavier than Y (again, tailored to deadball or Ruth era batters). I think the pushback from fans and players if they went away from wood would be very substantial. I think much more substantial than the pushback for the pitch clock or other recent changes. Just guessing, but I think it would be easier to convince the world that moving the mound back is a better option. Just moving away from the sound of ball hitting wood bat might spark a revolution. There are no shortage of people who say college baseball isn't real baseball because of aluminum bats (even if they've moved to composite? I don't watch enough college ball to know.) Also, if you're not careful you could get into a college baseball situation where before they got the bats under control teams were scoring like 10 runs a game or more. And I have no idea of the underlying reasons, but in 2023 the median runs/game across all college baseball leagues was nearly seven, which is a level that hasn't been approached in MLB since the 1800s. The ACC averaged 7.5, which makes pre-humidor Coors look like a Camden Yards where every batter is a right-handed pull hitter.
    • I get that McCann’s bat is not ideal in the lineup (on the days that he plays). And Mullins struggled really bad for about 6-7 weeks. And Mateo/Urias are no great shakes themselves. But even with all/each of them getting regular to semi-regular ABs, we have the #1 offense in the sport. Like it literally doesn’t get any better. So how do we “need” another bat. Maybe if Mayo is still here, he comes up at some point and strengthens us even more? But I struggle to understand the idea of us needing more offense, especially when the pitching is this shaky. Do you want Cano (who know looks like he’s lost it) and Perez coming in to try to hold games in the 7th/8th inning only to turn it over to Kimbrel in the 9th in October?  Maybe we defeat SEA/NY and reach a World Series for the first time in over 40 years. How would you like our chances of potentially Ranger Suarez vs Irvin/Kremer/Suarez/Povich for 2 times in a potential 7 game series? Seems like the Phills would have a strong advantage there, no?
    • I'm guessing that without a major technological breakthrough we're getting the 2024 version. Which, in the absence of other information, is his career averages with a bit of age-related decline thrown in. I'm assuming the year-to-year variation we see in his record is mostly random noise overlaid on his basic talent level.
    • I'd argue that they became the evil empire circa 1920, when they were drawing 40% more attendance than anyone else in the league, game-day related revenues were almost all revenues at the time, and so they started to have resources and payroll substantially higher than any other team. In 1920 the Yanks drew 1.3M fans, the A's 0.3M. The A's didn't have a chance until Connie Mack pulled a Mike Elias and assembled arguably the greatest collection of relatively cheap, young talent the game had ever seen.
    • Also, check out Fangraph's Top 45 O's Prospects review of Mayo:
    • https://www.mlb.com/news/max-scherzer-rangers-mets-trade   The Rangers on the hook for 22.5M total. According to Cots, NY is paying 30M this year, which means the Rangers had to pay 13M this year.  So, the Os or anyone else will probably only have to pay 5ishM by the time they would deal for him. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-west/texas-rangers/
    • Why not change the bat? The idea that wood bats make sense in the modern era is rather suspect. Give hitters a better weapon and offense will improve. Make the barrel bigger and the bat lighter. Equipment guys could "fit" each hitter like the guys in the Tour equipment trucks do now on the PGA tour. Leave the ball the same.
