Jays Trade PTBNL for Sandwich Pick --- Err, Miguel Olivo

The Colorado Rockies have traded catcher Miguel Olivo to the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named.

The Rockies wanted to trade Olivo before the deadline for declining his option, which comes with a $500k buyout.

The Jays have declined Olivo's option, making him a free agent. He's a Type B free agent, so if he declines arbitration, they'll get a sandwich pick when he signs elsewhere.

Pretty shrewd move by the Jays. They just bought a sandwich pick for a PTBNL and $500k. Wish the Birds could have gotten in on this one.

The Birds NEVER do these kind of smart moves. If there is one flaw for MacPhail, its that he's slow to make decisions and does not think outside the box, unless you consider the Atkins move a good one! :vader:

They have to offer arbitration to get the pick. What if he accepts?

If he accepts, they are stuck with him.

But, it is quite apparent that Olivo wouldn't be a starting catcher in Toronto and he wants to start. He could probably get the same salary as his option on the open market.

If he accepts, the Blue Jays will probably look to trade him little to nothing.

Right. So, it's not a smart move yet.

I agree.

This situation is similar to the Felipe Lopez situation when he signed with Boston to end the season. They will offer arbitration and could get a compensation pick out of it.

Of course, Olivo and Lopez could accept arbitration and Toronto and Boston don't get the pick and are stuck with a player they will have to trade.

But taking the risk is impressive.
