This.

And a note to point 1: players get raises in arbitration.

Not necessarily.

Pre-FA players almost always get raises in arbitration, because the added year of experience is assumed to add value. And if they haven't improved, they are often non-tendered anyway.

But there is no guarantee that a potential FA arb player gets a raise.

Sorry, I have always been a Macphail defender but I am now officially off the reservation....the frustrating thing if there is a strategy, that there is absolutely zero interest in informing the few remaining fans of this pathetic organization.

Red Sox or Yankees or Tampa Bay sign him I hope to a two year deal and he pitches lights out for them.

If that happens, I'll be happy to start the torch and pitchfork brigade up to the Warehouse. :angryfire:

Sure 3-6 years players almost always get a raise. But FA arbitration is another story all together, which is the case for Koji.

There is no way Millwood is going to a raise if the Orioles offer him arbitration and they go through the process...

Is there a place to check on this? While there is no guarantee that a potential FA arb player gets a raise, I think he always does.

You know, this is just further evidence that the Orioles just don't place the value on amateur talent that they should.

There is no excuse for this. Good teams just don't do this.

They just aren't a smart organization in any way. We are going to continue to be doomed with these jokers in charge.

The only way...and I mean the ONLY way...this move would be plausible, would be if both of these guys told the Orioles there was NO WAY they'd turn down arbitration.

Now...even if they did...the worst thing that could happen is that we have them here for one more season. I would guess Koji would be around 5 million and Millwood around 7. Would that be terribly bad considering we're likely to go find a innings-eater and a couple of bodies for the bullpen?

So...I guess I'm changing my mind now. This just sucks. No way around it.

I don't agree with this either. In MacPhail's defense he has often been criticized on these roster moves only to be vindicated. If the Orioles plan on offering up to 2/8, I could see this making some sense versus offering arbitration and ending up paying $7-8mm. Let's not forget he is 35 and injury prone. If the Orioles really want him, the odds are they can outbid other suitors and still be better off than if he accepted arbitration.

Which is why he wasn't going to get 7-8 million.

I am sure all the AM azz kissers will be along soon to tell us how smart this is.

:cussing::cussing::cussing:

This is uncalled for. One can think that AM has a good plan and executes it generally well without being an "azz kisser." It's even possible to disagree with him from time to time about certain things. Name calling is unhelpful.

I like MacPhail's plan and I've liked a lot of his moves. I've also found some odd (for the record, I wasn't opposed to Garrett Atkins, but I doubted Mike Gonzalez would be worth it).

Not offering Koji arb make very little sense to me. Would it not have been possible with either Koji or Millwood to, at the very least, have the "the player will certainly turn it down" gentlemen's agreement?

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
