Let's Give Chris Davis Some Credit

Interesting guy for sure. His career LD percentage is 23.3%. Can see why he has a high babip and was a very high average hitter in the minors. Doesn't seem to uppercut the ball a lot, but can take balls to the opposite field, opposite field with power and with relative ease. He's definitely made adjustments on the offspeed stuff that pitchers were getting him out with pretty regularly. Like others have said, he won't be a high walk guy but if he can cut that K% down along with some moderate improvements in the BB%, he could be a good one. I'm not sure I can think of a comp though. Maybe Trumbo among contemporary players.

I don't remember the details either but this was definitely what was said when Davis pitched.

There was some talk of making Davis a pitcher when the Rangers drafted him, and Buck was in Texas at the time. He pitched some (don't know how much) before turning pro.

A brilliant 10 pitch at bat ending in a walk to start off the game tonight and then a line drive double in the 3rd. Davis seems to be looking more and more like the hitter he was in the minors than the guy who struggled to hit with the Rangers.

I remember Roch Kubatko or someone else reporting that Buck first got the idea for using Davis as a reliever during his last year at Texas. I don't know the details, but maybe someone else can remember them.

For my fantasy team last week? Yes. Yes it was.

I give Buck a lot of credit for realizing that Davis is better at DHing than some other O's options. It is not easy to sit and go to bat and be productive. Davis is proving he can do it. He will play some 1B against National league team in their parks. But on the year I think Buck has Davis settling into the DH spot which is an adjustment from where Buck intended to go. Buck wanted to have many guys rotating through the DH spot. However Davis at DH and Reynolds at 1B has been too productive to ignore. Props to Buck for adjusting.
