UNC has had some very impressive games this winter and I think they have big potential even though they are the highest ranked team to already have three losses. Just routed NC State by an absurd 51 point margin.

This team doesn't have quite as good an inside presence as last year with Brice Johnson but in some other ways they seem better than the team that just barely lost the National Championship. I loved Marcus Paige and how clutch and competitive he was despite being such a nice and mild mannered guy. But Joel Berry is turning out to be a better all around player. Him and Justin Jackson (UNC version, I recently learned UMD has a guy of the same name) are just as effective a leading pair overall as Paige and Johnson were.

The ACC this year is nuts. The Tar Heels won both the regular season and tournament last year but I doubt they can replicate that feat with Duke, Louisville, and Virginia all still being top teams, and VTech and Florida State looking good too. Should be an exciting season. Anyone else see the UNC/Kentucky game last month? Crazy.

After two weeks of watching tons of ACC ball I'm ready to conclude that FSU and UNC might be the two best teams in the league.

Saturday's game between the two will be huge.   FSU is really impressive.   They play 13 guys, they run and play transition, they have some serious size and defense in their big men.

North Carolina was defeated by Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the first of 2 regular season match-ups between the two.

It was an extremely fun game to watch -- the defense was intense but clean, both teams played well offensively despite the good defense, and the refs didn't clog up the game with a lot of foul calls.    Really, the difference in the game was that UNC missed some critical free throws down the stretch.    I'm already looking forward to the rematch.

As a Duke fan, I have to say it was their best-played game against a top opponent all year.

You always want to beat Duke but I don't consider it a bad loss last night. As usual Duke brought their A game against UNC, especially from 3. Fantastic game by Allen and an impressive second half from Tatum. I thought Carolina played well but not their best-- they didn't get as many good looks from 3 as they often have this year, and as Frobby mentioned they missed more free throws than usual as well.

I think UNC should win the rematch in Chapel Hill, but Duke is certainly looking good lately.

North Carolina looked solid last night in a big home win against Louisville, keeping themselves atop the A.C.C. standings..

Two tough games remaining at Virginia and home against Duke. But I think they'll be slightly favored in both of those games, and if they play well they can finish at 15-3 in the ACC regular season. Quite a feat in such a loaded conference. Although I will say that UNC had a bit of a favorable schedule, since they were lucky to get a lot of their road games against the bottom teams in the conference. Among the teams we played only once, we got Florida State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Notre Dame at home. All of those teams are tourney-bound. Meanwhile we got Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, Boston College, and Wake Forest on the road. Those aren't all easy wins,  as evidenced by a couple losses in those games, but that's an easier batch of teams than we got at home.

Louisville's win over Notre Dame today, combined with Duke's win over Florida State earlier this week gives the Tar Heels the ACC regular season title outright.

Duke actually helped North Carolina win the the ACC regular season title outright.

Great job by UNC to get the tough win against Duke after the poor showing at Virginia. I'm impressed that they won such a strong conference by two whole games.

After watching Kansas escape time and time again against the best efforts of some very good Big 12 teams, they are probably my pick to win it all. But I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see UNC in the Final Four. Same could be said for Duke and Louisville. And I don't see any of the others as major Final Four threats, but the ACC again has the potential for quite a few teams to win a couple games in the tournament.

They were lucky to advance tonight. For the last 25 minutes of that game they did not play well at ALL. They finally got a couple of stops at the very end to survive.

Plus, after they took the lead late they got some favorable calls that helped prevent any chance of Arkansas bouncing back. Meeks definitely deflected the 3 pointer that went out of bounds. And Berry traveled right before taking a shot that Meeks rebounded for a critical score (though they also could have called a foul on Arkansas on that play for hitting Berry in the face as he picked up the dribble).

They have a bad habit of letting teams back in the game after taking nice leads. It happened in the loss to Duke in the ACC tourney, and it's happened a few other times in a games they eventually won. They will need to do a much better job of keeping up the intensity next weekend or they'll be out.

The no-call on the travelling by Berry III when North Carolina was up by one point was a bad call.

The tipped ball probably had no effect on the game, because there would have been only one second left on the shot clock had Arkansas retained possession.

    • Clearly. But this is like saying you disagree with the fundamental notion of positional adjustments used in WAR.
    • Baseball America - “Jackson Holliday’s One Flaw” Orioles shortstop Jackson Holliday is the No. 1 prospect in baseball. He’s the reigning Minor League Player of the Year. The year before that he was High School Player of the Year. He enters 2024 as one of the favorites to be the American League Rookie of the Year. The 20-year-old is an outstanding prospect and should be one of the better players in baseball over the next decade. It’s hard not to get excited about Holliday’s potential. But no player is perfect. In Holliday’s case, his one blemish is worth monitoring as he competes for a spot in Baltimore’s Opening Day lineup at second base or shortstop. It also explains why he’s not viewed as a potential third baseman. Holliday’s arm is short for shortstop at this point in his young career. Players can improve arm strength with healthy doses of long toss or other training techniques. But right now, arm strength is the only big question for the top prospect in baseball. Holliday has quick hands, a fast exchange and quick release. His body control is excellent and he seems to have the ability to know where everyone is on the diamond, even when he’s running with his back to home plate to try to run down a fly ball. As a savvy and advanced player for his age, Holliday figures out ways to ensure that his arm is rarely a hindrance. He has mastered a hip slide that allows him to pop up and throw when needed. But he rarely lets it rip on a throw.  In his month at Triple-A Norfolk to end the 2023 season, Holliday averaged 78.4 mph on his throws from shortstop, as tracked by MLB Statcast. His fastest throw on any play in the infield was 83.1 mph. The league average for MLB shortstops was 86.3 mph, according to Statcast. Elly De La Cruz and Masyn Winn are outliers on the upper end of the range. De La Cruz averaged 95 mph on his throws and topped out at 100, while Winn averaged 92.4.  But of the 65 MLB shortstops who had enough throws to qualify for a Statcast ranking in 2023, just three—Nick Ahmed, Thairo Estrada and David Fletcher—averaged throws slower than Holliday’s 78.4 mph. And 38 of the 65 qualified MLB shortstops had a higher average velocity on their throws than Holliday’s max throw of 83.1 mph. To get a better understanding of Holliday’s defensive ability, I watched well over 100 plays he made in the minors in 2023, including every televised extra-effort play, every non-routine throw and every ball at shortstop where he fielded the ball moving to his right. Watching that many plays, I saw a lot of what makes Holliday special. With two outs in a tie game in the 11th inning against Hudson Valley, Holliday saved the game for High-A Aberdeen with his savvy. Spencer Jones was running from second on a slow chopper well to Holliday’s left. Holliday realized he wasn’t going to be able to throw out the runner at first, but he decoyed a throw anyway, then spun and fired home to nab Jones by five feet. Aberdeen then won the game in the 12th. You see numerous examples of Holliday’s feel for the game. He knows when he can take his time on a throw and when he needs to get rid of it quickly. He seemed to be in sync with a wide variety of double-play partners, which was a necessity for a player who played at four different levels. Holliday’s range to his left is excellent. He regularly ranges beyond second base to make plays on choppers that would be tough for a second baseman going to his right to turn into outs. He is equally adept at coming in on choppers, fielding and throwing in one fluid and quick motion. Holliday also has soft and sure hands. He made just 13 errors all season. That range also plays into his ability to cover for his arm. At shortstop, he often sets up shaded significantly toward third base when a righthanded hitter bats with the bases empty. In these situations, he doesn’t have to worry about covering second base on a ball hit to an infielder.
    • Kinda surprised he isn't also a veteran.
    • OnlyOneOriole challenged him to post a photo of himself.   There ya go.
    • Your statistical case is pretty convincing, but I hesitate to judge him harshly without having watched him play a lot.
    • I disagree and Westburg isn’t “just average” at second.
