No, see, the basepath is established by Ichiro at the point of the attempted tag. He definitely goes beyond that three feet point. I agree that if Matt just throws the mask and blocks it doesn't matter, but I think the throw up the line threw him off a bit. Either way, he would never expect Ichiro to go THAT far to avoid the tag.

I see him going 3 feet away, but he never leaves the dirt, he starts his jump away at the beginning of the circle and has plenty of room in the dirt, so if the circle is fair game, then I think he stayed in the "base path". Still, very frustrating.

That can't be true. And if it were it would obviously be reflected in the above mentioned rule.
