Kevin Gausman Today, 2013

He's doing fine just at the pace (and the place) that he is at right now.

I hope that Gausman stays in AA for another month, then goes up to AAA for the final 2-and-a-half months of the season.

Half of a (minor league, 5-month) season at AA where is is progressing very nicely, and half a season at AAA, where I hope that he keeps right on rolling.

I disagree with a conservative plan for Gausman. Call up Gausman now.

Gausman is an advanced, polished college pitcher. He doesn't need to be handled carefully. Look at what the Reds did with Mike Leake. He's a much less talented pitcher, but he skipped the minor leagues altogether and he has been in their rotation going on 4 seasons already, providing major value by eating innings and giving his team a decent chance to win most of the time. Gausman is a potential ace. He would help the Orioles win games now, and he's better than everyone else we've tried - Garcia, Jurrjens, Stinson, Johnson.

He's got the best stuff, and his control and ability to miss bats are better than anyone else we have in the minors.

The Orioles need to call him up now.

Oh, I forgot, I have to prove myself to you. Thanks for reminding me:)

You think I am a liar? Why would I say that? I was shocked myself.

Search it. I don't have permission to search threads I don't believe. There is only 50 different threads on here at any given time.

Yeah, I didn't think anyone said that.

Maaaaan. Where'd Manny be right now if you were in charge?

First of all, we're talking about Gausman, not Machado. Gausman is a starting pitcher, and Machado is a position player. Secondly, every player (pitchers and positions players) are all judged and brought along on an individual basis. I didn't have a problem with Machado coming up when he did last year. I didn't know if it would work out well or not, and I was surprised that they called him up straight from AA-Bowie (as almost all were), but I wasn't necessarily alarmed about it.

Where would the Orioles be if you were in charge ???

Oh, they'd probably be on the moon. I'm very serious about space travel and I think it'd really give them the boost they need (to be astronauts).

Agree w this... its not like we have some proven track record of bringing pitchers along in our minor league system, just about every arm we have tried to nurture along in the farm the past decade has disappointed. Whats the harm in letting him learn up in the majors, its not like we have a logjam of talented options like the Reds or Braves.

I will go a step further and say Gausman would probably be better off learning from the big league coaches and taking his lumps up here.

I tend to agree that he could use some more seasoning. I do think they should be more aggressive than you have proposed though. Should he put together say 3-4 more good starts at AA its time to move him to AAA IMO. Then make a judgement based on his performance there.

Gausman played in the SEC which I get is different than minor league ball but it is a very competitive setting and he is a more polished product than say Bundy who came out of high school. I would be slightly surprised if he does not make the club by the time the rosters expand in Sept.

DD said AA is enough of a proving ground and we saw that with Machado. I agree with you about the SEC and he's pitched in some big games, too.

The 3-4 starts you speak of is just enough time for them to get Wada up here and find out he's not the answer either. Then, it's on to Gausman. No AAA.

I have a feeling that Gausman will be coming directly up to the Orioles in early June, at which point he will have gone past the deadlines for both free agency, and arbitration.

Matusz (the University of San Diego) came up directly from AA-Bowie in 2009 also. He came up in early August, but that was because he had started said season at Advanced-A Frederick for a little over 2 months, then went up to AA-Bowie for 2 months before getting the (major league) call.

    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
    • I agree. You have to wonder if the Yankees are behind him getting hit. Perhaps the ghost of George has struck
