I'll tell you who will them and thats Nick Markakis. He had good base stealing stats last season but a lot of them (especially early on in the year) came at the back end of double steals. It'll be interesting to see if he can reach 20 or more this year without their help.

As I recall, almost everytime you did a month-by-month comparison of the O's last season, it was usually the defense and pitching that failed us most in the months where we struggled and that surprisingly the offense was fairly consistent, at least month by month. So in that regard, unless the pitching makes up the difference, I think it may matter a lot.

I think Nick is a 25 steals guy. That's nothing to sneeze at, but I don't see him stealinmg 30-40 and higher like Patterson and Roberts can.

We're definitely going to miss the SBs, and they can't be replaced easily, because those guys in addition to getting high quantaties of steals, are also high percentage runners (84% between the two of them last year).

We're not gonna replace that, at least not easily. However, that still doesn't create an amount of runs that is terribly difficult to add in other areas.

As we are configured right now the Orioles have very little power. Without the power you have a tough time driving guys in from first. How many times did Brob steal second and score on a single or go from first to second to third and then score on a out.

The Orioles will definitely miss those SBs but mainly the speed that goes with it. The advantage of having speed guys like Roberts and Patterson is to force the other team to make an error or a mistake since they would know that it is possible for them to attempt to stretch out a single into a double or a double into a triple is the right opportunity presented itself.

IMO, the Orioles are mainly a station-to-station team so without the threat of the 'speed' and/or stolen base threat, teams can relax a little more knowing that they will not have to worry about someone attempting to capitalize mistakes/errors and taking an extra base. The lack of the speed, if it is not replaced, may drive up the possibility of more double plays.
