No way the Cubs would. Simply put, there's no deal to be had if Gausman and Bundy are off the board. They could just go after one of Kyle Zimmer, Yordano Ventura, Lucas Giolito, Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman, Tyler Skaggs etc. Those are all young pitchers with good to excellent stuff from teams that are interested in Samardzija.

Yes, I am sure that the Cubs are shopping Samardzija. I think that they have made that pretty clear. I am not so sure that they will be able to find the kind of deal that will make you happy, though.

Um Which one isn't better? I assume you're going to say Giolito, but when healthy Giolito has better stuff than any starter in the minors including Archie Bradley. I guess you could mean Skaggs since he was disappointing last year, but he was a top 20 guy the year before.

Based on the quotes I've already seen, I'm not at all worried about the return he's going to bring. You're going to be surprised.

I don't think it's going to take Bundy or Gausman to land Samardzija. The Cubs will ask for them, but the Orioles can point to his age (on the wrong side of 20) and inconsistency to talk them down. I think Rodriguez would be a fair comprise. Or maybe even Urrietta, if they want a bat.

One thing to keep in mind, is that Samardzija spent his first few seasons in the league pitching in relief. So in some ways, he's still probably learning how to be a starter. Anyone who's seen him pitch knows that he definitely has the potential to become better. Call me old fashioned, but I love a pitcher who misses as many bats as he does.
