When did the shift become the norm in baseball? Even three years ago, I don't remember shift being used on almost every hitter.

Perhaps hitters coming up begin to develop the ability to hit the other way more and more. Some of the potential cyclicality is removed, though, I guess as you can reset defenses for each individual hitter.
