OK, so it looks like Detroit

They have a couple of guys you can see going 7 or 8 innings against us' date=' which would greatly reduce their need for a pen. They will also be adding Sanchez to the pen, which could be a wildcard in the playoffs.[/quote']

Someone suggested Verlander should be the new closer. Thankfully the Tigers are too proud to make that move.

It was brushed off when I brought it up before, but the Tigers haven't seen Chen in 2 years. So his ERA against them is pretty irrelevant.

The only player left from that lineup is Cabrera.

There is a reason why Chen has not faced the Tigers in two years. The Tigers lead the world in hitting lefthanded pitching.

The ERA's vs Detroit

Tillman- 3.58

Chen- 4.91

Norris- 6.57

Gonzalez- 8.47

Gausman- 5.40

Might be risky to start Gonzalez

Here are our starters' numbers vs. batters currently on the Tigers:

Tillman:

82 PAs .247/.293/.481/.773

Hunter 1/4, HR

Kinsler 4/16, 2B, HR

Cabrera 5/13, 2B, HR

Martinez 4/10

Chen:

21 PAs .286/.423/.429/.852

Hunter 1/4, 2B

Kinsler 3/10, 2 doubles

Cabrera 1/4, 2 BB

Norris:

80 PAs .211/.250/.395/.645

Hunter 3/12, 2 doubles, HR

Martinez 4/12, 2B, HR

Kinsler 3/8, HR

Cabrera 3/12, 2 doubles

Gonzalez:

71 PAs .328/.380/.672/1.052

Hunter 2/5, HR

Kinsler 3/11, 2B, HR

Cabrera 3/12, HR

Martinez 1/5

Rajah Davis 4/12, 3 HRs(!)

Gausman:

28 PAs .250/.321/.250/ .571

Hunter 2/3

Kinsler 1/4

Martinez 0/4

Cabrera 1/5

Gausman has not allowed an extra base hit to any current Tiger.

Norris has not had much success against Detroit (0-3), but his overall numbers are somehow not bad. (Those numbers include an 0-for-2 from David Price when Bud was in the NL.)

As other posters have said, the Tigers have barely seen Chen.

Gonzalez looks like the clear odd man out, due in part to his inability to keep Rajah Davis in the yard.

I don't think you can draw a whole lot of conclusions from this, other than to say that Gonzalez probably won't get a start, and when he does pitch, he should be very careful with Rajah Davis

Right with their starters dominating our weakened Manny and Davis less offense they don't need a bullpen, just a closer. To all you Pollyannas espousing the Orioles will beat them because of their lousy pen, it sure wasn't the case when Detroit swept us in our home yard this season. So that holds no water at all.

Who did you call a Pollyanna?

They also played us before we hit our groove. I think you are underestimating this team; which is fine, I prefer to be the underdog.

It def. holds water. But the Tigers have the ability to mitigate the damage their pen can do. Not saying they will, but it's certainly possible.

Gausman's numbers look pretty darn convincing

I mostly prefer to be on the opposing side of an OldFan argument. It usually works out.

I have told everyone here that the Orioles simply don't have the horses that Detroit has, especially when it comes to offense and starting pitching. Yes the Orioles have a much better bullpen and defense but in a playoff series Detroit has the big advantage and will be heavily favored and probably picked to sweep by many experts.

The A's definitely have the horses...
