My feeling about ushers is, if I actually have a reason to want them to wipe my seat off, I tip them for doing it. If they just do it on their own, when I would have been perfectly happy to just go down and be seated unescorted, then I don't tip them.

Agreed. I tipped one once because it was the middle of the inning, the people he was taking to the seats were in the middle of the row and he just showed them where the seats were and had them grab a couple empty seats while the AB was going on. Of course that wasn't at OPACY because the OPACY ushers have zero baseball sense and will have an entire row get up during an AB so they can wipe down a seat and collect their precious dollar.

I'll tip the ushers if I ask them to show us our seats and they have a reason to wipe off the seat. I'm certainly not going to tip a guy who just sold me an $8 beer.

I usually don't tip at bars for beer until the end of the night.

I've never seen this occur.

He did not sell you an 8 dollar beer. He delivered one to you.

This also reminds me of one of the most bizarre situations I have ever encountered at OPACY, or anywhere else for that matter. I was in the middle of the row and ordered a beer from the usher. He asked to see my ID, so I passed down the money and my ID. Before actually receiving the money/ID, he passed the beer down to me through the people in between us, like normal. This ******* woman sitting next to me refused to give me the beer until the usher "verified" my ID. Like... she literally held on to the beer and told me I had to wait. It may not seem like much, but I was completely dumbfounded. Who does that??? I really wanted to give her a piece of my mind and explain to her that SHE is not part of this transaction. I kind of regret not saying anything actually.

Thats a frustrating story to even read, like you I probably would have been too shocked to actually do something about it.

I do not have anything against the ushers, I just don't like tipping for a service I did not ask for and don't particularly want. It's a little like those guys who come up to cars at stoplights and start washing their windows, and then want to be paid for it. Now, if the seats are wet or otherwise need to be wiped down, I will ask them to do it and gratefully tip them.

Swing by the section 16/18 area...it happens all the time. It's not just a "this happened once" kind thing. I've had conversations with the ushers about it and asked them to stop.

That is a shame. I know two of the ushers down that way and know they don't even care about tips. In fact if the lower bowl does not fill by the third, I've seen them get the folks from 15 and 17 and bring them down. I guess it only take one bad apple though.

To be honest I don't know if the guy in particular I'm thinking about cares about his tips, but that's the conclusion I have to draw. The money really isn't the point (it would still irritate me if he turned down the money). Just the fact that they will disrupt several rows of people during an AB to seat a late arrival.

Anyway - not sure how I got on that based on a thread about tipping. Which I do tip ushers if I have them wipe my seat after a rain delay or whatever and I CERTAINLY tip my beverage vendors!

I would have thought nothing less of you.

o

When the Orioles played the Red Sox in the last series of the season in September of 2011, the ushers in the field level were being unusually strict in terms of checking everybody's tickets to see if they were sitting in the correct seats. I saw dozens of people that were told to leave when it was discovered that they were doing what I always do ...... buying the cheaper tickets and doing their own "upgrade."

When the usher asked to see mine and my girlfriend's tickets, I showed him. They were $15 upper-reserve tickets ...... but he simply pointed to a row that was right next to us, and told us to enjoy the game.

I gave him $5.00.

Good man.

Never understood why the ushers at OPACY are so uptight about this. For the first few innings, sure. But after the 6th, why not?

I always tip the beer man! I never tip the usher, but then again, I think I've only ever had decent enough seats for the usher to wipe off my seat once. I'm normally in the nosebleeds and they just point up.
