Trade deadline possibilities

In LA, why?

He still traded for him. You said DD didn't target those types of players. We just gave you two examples.

He was traded from Atl to La. I didnt say he never signed fly ball pitchers. But because of C Yards and Bucks focus on defense they prefer ground ball pitchers

He did indeed say that only 2 starters are on the market now and that 15 teams want starting pitching. He mentioned that more pitchers will be on the market as the deadline draws nearer. He signaled that he is very willing to trade prospects to try to win a pennant.

That is what I remember as well. He had a few other interesting comments as well:

Our minor league organization is there to provide players for the major league team, whether that means our MiL players themselves or people who we trade them for (common refrain from Dan).

He talked about Parker Bridwell as if we will see him in an Orioles uniform this season. He wasn't really very coy about it either. In fact he might have said outright that he expects Bridwell to be up and make a contribution to the big league team this season.

He didn't poo poo the notion of piggy-backing starters. He said we have a lot of good arms in the organization, maybe not guys who can get through the opposing team's lineup 3 times, but guys who at this stage in their development could get through 1 or 2 times. He specifically mentioned Wilson and Bundy.

All in all one of the more candid spots that I've seen with Dan.

I have no problem with Shoemaker this year as well as Hellickson, or Santana. I just don't want to be stuck with him for the next 4 years. There are other more interesting choices in next year FA than him for a #5 SP.

You aren't "stuck with him for the next 4 years". He has 4 years of team control left. He'll be a Super Two after this year and will make a couple million bucks at most next year.

Yeah but who are you willing to give away for any of them. Listen if its for b level c level prospects.. Take a flyer.. but no blue chippers for those 2.

Thats what GM's do. He wants it to get out that the O's are not going to over spend (trades) on SP.. Poker face

He has declined since his one good year. I think next year we have a rotation of Tillman, Gausman, Gallardo, Bundy, and a #5, I want someone better than Shoe maker.

So now you admit he is on the decline. But you still want to trade good prospects for another declining pitcher ? SMH

He is 29 and in his third full season in the majors. He was great in his first season and has been average in the last two, likely with the league adjusting to his stuff. I don't think I would call that a decline. His FIP the last two seasons are 3.66 (this year) and 4.59. He strikes out a batter an inning.

I'm not advocating going after him specifically just trying to be clear on what type of players I expect the team to go after and what they will cost.

    • If you "reconstruct the inning without the errors" that means you replay the inning without the ghost runner.   So on that ground ball that got the runner at the plate, you now assume Langeliers would have been thrown out at first.
    • So I looked up the rule book and I can't find anything that says this is the case. Maybe I'm missing it because the rules for unearned runs can be convuluted to say the least. "For purposes of calculating earned runs under Rule 9.16, the runner who begins an inning on second base pursuant to this rule shall be deemed to be a runner who has reached second base because of a fielding error, but no error shall be charged to the opposing team or to any player. For purposes of Rule 9.02, the Official Scorer shall keep records of the number of times each batter and runner is placed at second base in accordance with this rule." In the rulebook under unearned runs it states, "An earned run is a run for which a pitcher is held accountable. In determining earned runs, the Official Scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors (which exclude catcher’s interference) and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there been errorless play. For the purpose of determining earned runs, an intentional base on balls, regardless of the circumstances, shall be construed in exactly the same manner as any other base on balls. (a)  The Official Scorer shall charge an earned run against a pitcher every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder’s choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches (including a wild pitch on third strike that permits a batter to reach first base) before fielding chances have been offered to put out the offensive team. For the purpose of this rule, a defensive interference penalty shall be construed as a fielding chance. A wild pitch is solely the pitcher’s fault and shall contribute to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk." I don't see where it states a batter that reaches on a fielder's choice due to a runner being being on due to error.
    • Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful book, called “The Baseball 100,” his 100 greatest players. It’s full of wonderful quotes, but it leaves out a quote that is not just all of Baseball in three words, but that applies to all of life. ”Sometimes you suck.” Adam Jones. God bless Adam Jones. Yes, Hyde makes boneheaded decisions almost every game. Yes Mike should have done this or not done that, Yes Cowser shouldn’t have thrown that way, Ryan shouldn’t have missed the fly, yada yada. I was screaming as loud as anyone. My wife said,”I thought you liked baseball,” But now it’s tomorrow.  “Sometimes you suck.” Charge on.
    • Game 4 of Yankees series. It’s one game, but one game could be the difference in the division, having to play in the WC series, and home field advantage.  Things to consider…  How did games 1-3 go versus the NYY?  Should we ease Bradish back in a lower pressure spot so he’s not too amped up for his own good? Do we play matchups and go with a LH SP in OPACY? What happens in Irvin’s start today?
