At this point just give me someone who can cover a decent amount of ground so Jones can stop jamming his shoulder/hand/wrist while trying to dive for balls in Siberia.

True-they have run him into the ground like they did Wieters.

Bourn's performance late last year reminds me too much of De Aza's late season performance when we traded for him. I'm very wary of resigning Bourn.

I wouldn't mind having De Aza or Bourn back as the 5th OF.  I'd like us to sign a RF.  Kim is LF.  Then the bench will be Flaherty, Joseph, Rickard, 5th OF.

Sure we could go with one of the rule 5 guys, but winning the division and avoiding the WC game should be the goal.  Having a Bourn/De Aza type over the rule 5 guy might make some difference.

Saunders is an all-around good player.  Good bat.  Good power.  Has speed.  His defensive deficiencies are grossly overstated, IMO.  His defensive metrics are all over the place.  I think it as much the imperfections with the defensive metrics as anything else.  In 2014, he rated fourth among all AL outfielders and first among right fielders in total zone runs.  The only thing consistent about his defensive metrics is that he has always shown well in right field.  Good arm.  He can play all three spots, but right looks to be the best for him, and is our position of greatest need.  Coming off a good year with the bat, and just turned 30 last month.  Actually had a .900+ OPS vs. LHP last year.  No QO.  Of the realistic options available, he is my preferred choice by a wide margin.

If his predicted 3 yr, $33 mil deal comes to fruition, I support the signing.  I think that's good value for Saunders.

What form is he returning to?  The last time he was good was 2012 and i was entirely based on speed. He is no longer exceptionally fast and will be 34.

I was wondering that, as well.  At age 33... I'm at a loss to respond to those who somehow think Bourn could be the answer in RF,  He's a lifetime 87 OPS+ hitter.  Last season - even with the stint in Baltimore, his OPS+  for the season was 79.  He's a marginal ML player at this point in his career - with a wet noodle for a RFer's arm.

Its about cost. I dont believe they gave up too much for either Bourn or De Aza, if they do well, great, pat em on the back and say thanks, if not, pat em on the back and escort to the door and say, nice knowing you.

Now, you compare to Parra, that was costly.

Yeah we didn't give up anything really for the both of them.  De Aza just got off to a bad start in 2015, he played pretty well for BOS that year.  Looked like he was trying to jack homers and steal bases.  Like he was trying to enter FA as a 15/15 or 20/20 guy.  I don't think Buck liked the CS he had early on.

We went down the Rasmus road too in the 2014-15 offseason.  I remember him being viewed as a head case and Buck had a meeting with him.  He then signed with the Astros and popped off in 2015.  I don't know if he is a Buck guy after all that.

So Rasmus, De Aza, and Bautista probably aren't Buck guys.  Saunders and Moss might not pass our physical.  Limits are FA options.

He was pretty miserable with the Mets last year.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I still think the best idea would be to sign Encarnacion and go with Bourn or someone like him in RF.  It's just a matter of money.  If we're willing to give Trumbo 15-16 million a year then just pay the extra 3-4 million and get Encarnacion.

If not we could go a similar route to what we did in replacing Nelson Cruz.  Sign/trade for a few mid level platoon vet guys.  We may have saved 5 million in salary but we lost production and we ended up losing Davies, Brault and Tarpley in the process.

We could give Pagan and Pedro Alvarez 7 million next year.  I'd be happy with that, but I think EE makes the most sense.

Encarnacion was tagged with a qualifying offer.  It would not be just a matter of money.

You're right it would cost up about 10-15 spots in the draft.  We'd lose our 1st rd pick to sign him, but then gain a pick for Trumbo signing elsewhere.

So signing EE over Trumbo would cost us about 3-5 million per year in salary and we'd pick 10-15 spots in the draft later.

But we'd gain a player that's posted WAR's of 3.7,4.7, 3.6, 4.0, and 5.0 (21 total WAR) the last five seasons.  Trumbo has only posted WAR's of 1.6, 1.6, -1.1, 2.1, and 2.5(6.7 total WAR).

But I'm using the theory of "If there's money for Trumbo, than we should be able to use that same money on someone else."  That might not be the case, and the money might be "special Trumbo money" like was thought off about the Davis money last year.
