If it means nothing then you're going to have to ask all the Vegas Casinos why they have actuary teams running constant statistical analysis. Seems a lot of money to spend if the opening numbers don't matter.

The actuaries base the opening numbers based on where they expect the betting to be.

And if they are right and get an equal amount of betting on each team, then they are guaranteed to make money.

So they don't care the "true chance" of how well a team is going to do.   Their skill lies in anticipating how the betting public will wager.

I disagree with the idea that the contender we trade him to next summer will have any sort of "inside track to sign him long term."   The answer to that is Scott Boras, period.  No way, no how Manny does not go to free agency and whomever signs him gets to compete with paying the most dollars.   AND I think the team that gets him next summer (if we wait till then) will factor that into their equation and reduce their offer to us accordingly.  Plus ALL teams will by then know that we have absolutely zero leverage if we are into next season...because they will know we will get essentially zilch if we don't accept one of their offers.

Yes, we could shop him this winter, however, we have to decide first if that is what we are going to do....namely, you can't just keep diddling around and not make him your best offer and wait around all winter long too.

I think that Duquette and Angelos are absolutely going to screw this up, big time.

Of course they are.

I guarantee that no matter what the outcome, there will be several people on OH who assert that they have screwed it up.

If we buy and give up significant farm talent -- it will be almost all of us.

If we stand pat -- it will be a lot of us.

If we sell -- there will still be a bunch of people who swear we didn't get nearly enough, or we failed because we only sold SOME expiring assets and didn't wring every ounce of value out of everyone who might be a free agent.

By the way -- Kenley Jansen just gave up a game tying 3-run HR In the 9th.

Agreed. No where in my post does it say otherwise.

You did say that Manny should return much more in a mid season rental deal next year than Aroldis Chapman returned last year.  This remains to be seen.

In short, I don't think Britton is anywhere near his 2016 form. Is that good enough for the Dodgers, Astros or whoever?  Maybe. We will have to see what plays out in the next week.

How did Britton look today? I'd say like his old self no?

Adding somebody doesn't guarantee anything either.  See Orioles 2012-2016 versions.   And I don't recall the 1969 Orioles adding anybody or the As of the 1970s, etc.

The 2012 - 2016 Orioles were very unlikely to win the WS as the teams never had enough starting pitching and we did not have the trade chips for anything more than marginal additions.....Dont quote the 70s its a different game now and not relevant.

Pretty evident he did imo. His stuff was there. Having some control issues here and there is likely due to rust and just getting back in the hang of it. I don't think scouts/teams are going to worry too terribly much when they see the velo is back and his stuff looks to be back.

Agreed and this has been my point.

He looked good.  A little wild, but he had (I think) Gattis tied up in knots.  No good contact.

He got bailed out on his first strikeout.

A lot better than watching the tying run take him deep and then get ripped for a double by a middle infielder.
