29 year old infielder with limited upside on a rebuilding team makes little to no sense.  Let Beckham play and see if he can play an adequate defensive short then make the decision.

Wouldn't he cost about $2M for the rest of the year? What's the point?

As far as next year, he will be a free agent regardless of whether we pick him up now.

Hechavarria was the guy the Rays brought in last year because they were dissatisfied with Beckham’s defense at SS.

If he wasn't a free agent at the end of the year Id say go for it. But there's no point with Beckham and Villar on the roster.

Since we aren't about contending for a while why not keep Beckham at SS until someone from our system takes his job. Beckham is at least league average defensively.

Beat me to it. Haha. The Rays were going to designate Beckam if they didn't get any takers then Brady jumped in offered up Myers to rid the Rays of Beckam. Now they can go get his no hitting replacement.

Beckham's defense is terrible.  I thought initially it might have been a range thing but his glove is stone.

Done.   I have seen enough of Beckham's defensive ability and am now ready to look for a replacement.
