For the FIP lovers, Straily registered a 5.11 last season, a 4.58 in 2017 and a 4.88 in 2016. He and has never been under 4.00.

Some were clamoring last year for the Orioles to trade for him. Maybe Straily is a #3 on the 2019 Orioles, but there are few teams that he would qualify as anything more than a #5.

It appears that no team offered much more than the league minimum. You know, what were were paying Pedro Araujo. Maybe the lure of playing with  Trey mancini and Jon Villar was worth something. And of course Baltimore is a fine town  for a ballplayer according to Aubrey Huff. 

I suspect the likelihood of a permanent rotation spot and the kicker of 250000 when traded entered in.

He has not pitched for over two weeks.Might take him two weeks to get up to speed. Then will need to be stretched out .

I question having Straily active, he would have benefited from working out for a week.

He's on a major league contract. He has no options. You can just pitch him on the side, but he has to be with the team and he does take up a 25-man roster spot.

I'm no expert but couldn't he have been sent to extended spring training?

Seriously? He's started 90 games over the last three years and has an ERA around 4.00 over that span. He's likely to be the 2nd best starting pitcher on the team and would be no worst than a 4th On most teams.

Oh it is bad, no doubt. Today was just a taste of just how bad the pitching can be. Hopefully someone goes more than six innings soon.

You have to take into account that he’s been pitching in a pitcher’s ballpark the last two years.   ERA+ of 93 and 89 those two years.    For an Orioles pitcher, that translates to about 4.75 ERA.    If we got anything below 5.00 from him, I’d be pleased.     As we found out last year with Cobb, it’s not easy to miss a big chunk of spring training and then pitch well in the majors.

No but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have. Perhaps Cobb told them he had been pitching and was ready. Obviously he wasn’t but that’s another issue.

I agree ... I’d be delighted if he was a 4 ERA pitcher. I was responding to @Beef Supreme‘s post about him being a 5th starter best case.
