They're similar levels of difficulty in my experience, but the Korean writing system is tremendously easy to learn (especially compared to Mandarin and Japanese).

Good for Brooks! No loss to the Orioles.

If your experience says they are of comparable difficulty why did you say Korean was "much easier"?

I agree that Korean in it's written form is easier to learn but I don't think most players are bothering to become literate.

I don't know what this means.  Maybe I shouldn't ask.

It was a joke about Communist China, suggesting that going to Korea to play baseball is better than going to China to play baseball.

Even though I’m not even sure that one CAN go to China to play baseball. And the TV shows are much better. And the language IS easier. I hope he tries to learn it.

Spoken Korean is not normally regarded as easier.  It is a very difficult langue that contains a regularly used sound that is not discernible to some English speakers.

Maybe you found Korean easy to learn but your experience is not the norm.

Let me clarify I was specifically talking about the difficulty of Chinese although Japanese is also very difficult. The Korean alphabet is a bit complicated but it’s logical, and thank God Korean is not a tonal language. Every time I sing something in Chinese to my wife it turns out I said something completely different and unrelated.

Elias must feel he can do better with other 6 year free agent and waiver claims.

Hopefully, but last year Elias didn't make too many of those moves in the offseason.  We had to scramble to pick up Brooks, Wojo, and Eshelman during the season.  Brooks is nothing to be upset about, but I do think he showed more than David Hess did.  Who knows if Hess sticks around either.

From MLBTR:

Quote

NOV. 13: The KIA Tigers have officially signed Brooks, per Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net. His deal comes with a $479K salary and a $200K signing bonus.

Brooks  gets a salary increase of 124K.

I think it was Brooks not having any options left that was the reason Elias let him go.   The O's would have had to commit 555K to him whether he pitched well or not.  Elias probably believes there are pitchers he can pick up that will do as well and that still have options.

That and it doesn't hurt to do a marginal player a solid in a situation like this.

  • 3 weeks later...

Was kinda bummed to read this article THE ATHLETIC @TonySoprano  about the most dominant pitches in 2019 for the MLB this morning and then remember that Brooks has gone to the KBO.

Quote

For example, we could define dominant as the stingiest results allowed on a pitch. Already we have a problem, though, because there are more than 800 pitch types in baseball that have allowed a .000 weighted on-base average (wOBA, where .325 was average last year). About 90 percent of them are probably erroneously labeled or random mistake pitches, things like: CC Sabathia’s curve, which he supposedly didn’t throw this year, or threw twice; Blake Snell’s sinker, which one site says he’s never thrown; or Chris Davis’ slider, which … how would we know which one was the slider?

His name starts with two A’s and he threw 21 curveballs, so Aaron Brooks’ curve is our most dominant pitch?

That curve looks decent, and it had above-average velocity and decent drop, so it’s at least a solid pitch. But it got half the whiffs of a regular curveball on average and really just benefited from the fact that it was thrown only 21 times, and every time it was put in play, it produced a groundball.

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
