The Orioles actively prepped themselves for tanking by trading their top pitching prospects, not participating internationally in a meaningful way and by forfeiting their top draft picks to sign less than stellar free agents. Boras was probably just as happy with their dependence on the free agent market then as he is upset with their tanking. Can't have it both ways. If you're going to help the Chris Davis and Ubaldo Jimienez types get out of this world contracts, don't complain when the teams that signed them fall to earth and have to start over. No, Boras doesn't make the owners sign the deals, but he plays the system hard one way. He shouldn't be surprised when the inevitable reckoning comes.

Note:I don't know who Ubaldo's agent was. if it wasn't Boras, it doesn't matter; he's just an example.

This is exactly correct and it speaks to the screwed-up contract regulations that see good, young players get jerked around by their teams, making the least and producing the most, while bums like Davis are guaranteed roster spots while their teams try to get them out of the mud.  We have players in Delmarva who'd probably be more productive than Davis and this guy is still on the roster.

MLB is best served by having the best players spend as much time as possible in front of the crowds.  My idea, service time clocks should start immediately as soon as guys are 20 years old, and free agency should be reachable in something like half the time it currently is.  Get more money into the hands of young studs, basically, and once guys start getting mediocre, let them be paid accordingly.

I have faith that most fans in this Hangout community have enough of a long-term 'Big Picture' perspective that they don't fret over how many wins our last place club finished with while rebuilding.

What benefit does the team get from losing 58 games rather than 62? Rebuilding and tanking are two different things.

Trading veterans for prospects is rebuilding. I support that.

Non-tendering good ML players so that you lose more games is tanking and I don't support that. It's disrespectful to the game and the fans in my opinion.

That would raise the value of international players and keep a lot of kids with aspirations of pro ball out of college.  Mancini would have been a free agent before making the majors under your system.  No wait, I guess the O's would have gotten five games out of him, since he didn't start playing pro ball until he was 21.

How about non-tendering good ML players because ownership set a budget that keeps you from tendering them?

That's easy (and obvious).. potentially higher draft position and $10 million that can potentially be spent elsewhere.

Or non-tendering a good ML player because you believe you can get similar production at a fraction of the price (which isn't an unreasonable position to take on Villar next year, imo). Just because your payroll is low doesn't mean you're in a position to make $10 million mistakes.

$65M is an extremely low payroll already. I don't see any benefits to lowering that to $55M, but correct me if I'm wrong there.

Winning 62 games vs 58 games absolutely means something to me. I watch most games. I want to see the team win every time I watch.

You know I am hoping for under 50.

Architect of his own destruction.  He was one of the first to push advanced metrics and statistics.  He created reams of reports to show his players deserved to be paid more.  Then the clubs started doing it and more and figured out the economics of baseball could be broken down into a lot more than whether a player got a customer through the gate.  Then they stopped paying his 35 year old players multi millions of dollars.

He also jacked salaries up so much he created an economic system where half the league's best strategy was to shut it all down, strip it to the bone and rebuild for 5 years for a small chance of a 3-5 year window.  The GMs told the owners and the owners signed off because they could make more money.

No one to blame but the man in the mirror. And the corruption of baseball will continue until the league realizes that they need to level the playing field a little bit more.

Add 6 MLB Franchises:

Nashville
Charlotte
Indianapolis
Las Vegas
Oklahoma City
Portland

That makes 36 teams - Make a A League and a B League

Then go with a promotion/relegation model. If you are in the bottom 2 of the A league, you are demoted, top 2 of B league promoted.

And people think fans lack interest now. Who in the hell would want to watch a B league at A league prices?

So tired of undefined terms

What is a living wage (Guys in the minors seem pretty healthy)?

What is a working class family ??

What is the "middle class"

Give me numbers

I absolutely  agree with you in principle, however it is excepted that the guys in the minor leagues do not make a living wage, whatever one defines as living wage. The famous story of Caleb Joseph having to deliver pizza in the off-season to make ends meet is not isolated. I am no socialist, but if the guys at the top of the food chain cared more about the guys at the bottom of the food chain, everything would be better. Right now the guys at the top Give no dams about the guys at the bottom

I'm pretty much OK with guys in the lower minors delivering pizza in the off-season.

Guys in the big leagues did it back in the day.

But the situation can be improved upon.

So it is no different in baseball than in life in general.
