Hafner and Horse Poop

"i went out after the game with the team, btw they were not at all happy about the Hafner influence."

This was posted in the Tillman thread. It sounds like the team may have let Hafner distract them during the series. Were the hitters pressing? Did the pitchers lose their cool and try to throw it by Hafner instead of pitching to him? Maybe, the team only felt this way after the games, but if they went into the final two games of the series already upset, they may have caused their own downfall.

Bowie got beat, it had nothing to do with Hafner. Bowie just got outplayed, and the Aeros had been leading the division for most of the season. When Bowie's offense decided not to show up for three days, and a couple Bowie pitchers didn't bring their A-game, well these are results.

However, Hafner being in the minors for that series is bush league, and if any seriously has a problem with it, the answer is not throw pitches at Hafner. Take a different stand: air your frustrations to the press, or write a letter to the Cleveland FO, or hold up a big sign at the game. It would be a novel idea to solve problems without violence once in a while.

Adam Jones is rehabbing in Baltimore. Why isn't Travis Hafner doing the same with the Indians? Better yet why isn't Jones in Bowie for a rehab assignment?

I think the difference here was the length of their injuries. Jones was on the DL for a relatively short period of time, whereas Hafner has been on the DL since mid-May. When I look at the situation from the Indians perspective I can understand their logic.

Hafner started out 2008 look awful at the plate with a down right brutal .686 OPS. Before his injury was announced there was alot of speculation as to his future with the Indians. Now that he is healthy the Indians are trying to determine if they can count on him going forward or if they need to make a move in the offseason. To do this they needed to make certain that Hafner was 100% ready and healthy to be in the Majors. Batting practice and simulated games weren't going to cut it and the only real option was to send him to AA for some actual game time.

Hafner playing in the series was without a doubt bush league, but when you consider how important Hafner is to the Indians offseason (10% of their payroll over the next 3 years) I can understand why they did what they did. They were pretty much in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Of course, even though I can understand the reason why it still sucks :bangwall:

Good or bad AA hitters only hit .217. So I really don't think he struggled against "AA" hitters.

Look, you're obviously irrational and - apparently - either decline to, or can't, comprehend what you read.

No one is deriding any prospects here. We're saying folks SHOULD NOT READ TOO MUCH into the struggles of the Bowie staff with REGARD TO THEIR MLB FUTURE simply because of their struggles in this series. Their flaws were evident before the series and this simply supported that scouting.

Now, if you want to claim that D Hernandez has no flaws, well...go ahead. But go do it on a board where it's more appropriate. Like one full of children or something.

We're not talking about shoe-bombing the Cleveland dugout.

Hafner absolutely should be hit in the leg/hip in his first at bat.

Hafner did what he was told. They should hit Mark Shapiro in his first at bat. Or make a trade with him and complete crush him like we did to the Mariners last off-season.

Complaining about the Indians making a bush league move is not the same as blaming said bush league move for the loss.

And Hernandez was not and is not ready for the big leagues. His control has not been good enough. While he might be slightly better than our current options, it would be rushing him to promote him. He should be a good ML pitcher someday, but that day isn't today.

Why blame Hafner for simply trying to do his best?

Hitting batters does not mean you are blaming them personally. When a pitcher hits a batter after the other team's pitcher hits his batter, it has nothing to do with the batter himself. The purpose is to send a message.

What purpose would this message serve? Would it set the tone for the non-existent Game 5? Would it discourage the Indians from doing something similar next year?

Wow, wow, wow, slow down Lucky, I believe he was only responding to your quote:

He's just saying we shouldn't be surprised that they struggled against Hafner (or even good AA hitters).

Which isn't true as he(Orioole28) had supported. And where did the Bowie staff struggle this year? They where 3rd in ERA!! They just had a bad series and now everybody being a super scout. Maybe they're not ready for the ML, but they aren't far off.
