Surprised about Ripken, he’s certainly not a prospect anymore. Also Palmeiro is a pretty big name. Look at his stats he certainly doesn’t have his fathers batting eye or sweet swing so far.

I'm not at all surprised that Ripken gets to hang around.

I was made aware of the release on Wednesday when one of the players involved was notified of the decision.  He reached out to me and asked that I not say anything.  Obviously it was made official by the club.  It is sad for some of these guys.  I wish them all well; no doubt some may land elsewhere.

Which I believe is the main reason for the large cut, especially now. I wonder how many were released by the club vs. asking for their release for other reasons.

Sensible long range plan for the FO.  Who knows who could be in a new ownership group some day?  I imagine the sons aim to keep if they can, but I don't know it's 100% the estate will transfer smoothly or if MLB will try to influence.

I remember big hurt the first time the org strained the relationship letting go of his dad.

He did get a midseason promotion and up the OBP a tick in first AA cup of coffee.  I'd DH him in a Mets game if they'd use Tebow.

There's another way to look at this though. This gives these young man an opportunity of getting on with their lives. While I'm sure it's a lot of fun at times to be a minor league baseball, and there is no short supply of young men willing to play, the vast majority of minor leaguers have no major league future.

While it may hurt at first, many will take this as the kick in the pants they need to get on with their lives and start working on that next phase of their lives. Many former minor leaguers end up very successful because of the drive it took to be exceptional at baseball and the hard work it took to play at the professional level.

I do feel bad for the Dominican guys though since there are less opportunities and they typically don't have the education level as the American players. 

As for this entire situation, I think we're going to see a lot of teams start releasing players as they grapple with losing short season leagues and of course, the COVID situation that has made the minor leagues questionable this year.

I'm embarrassed to say I don't recall if they have minor league games during labor lockouts.  I'd assume they do just without guys on the 40.

Thanks, I added that info.    

Looking at the list, 7th rounders Palmeiro and Breazeale were the highest picks to be cut.    22 of the 37 were foreign signings, most of whom never made it very high up in the system.    Excluding 1-2 game appearances, only 5 of the 37 played AA or higher (Palmeiro, Billingsley, Kipper, Miller and Clare).
