Wow, this thread has turned into a great exercise on why political discussions should not be allowed in this forum.

Sure, I agree and I'm backing out and I apologize for my part in escalating.  I think there could be a subforum here if people wanted to engage in political talk but it should certainly be kept out of the Orioles section.

Well enlighten me on what the proper response should have been?  Does assaulting a store owner and reaching for a police officer's weapon warrant being shot to death?  This isn't even a political discussion, it's just about being a decent person.

If only there were more decent thieving, store owner and police officer assaulting people like Michael Brown out there, this world would be a better place.

Except for purple people.  Because that’s going too far.  Shout out Mitch Hedberg.

While this thread has gone on for far too long IMO, on the plus side it's interesting to learn who some people are here. The typical moderation really covers up a lot of personalities.

I was leaving it up to Tony to stop it. I’ll close it at noon if I see no response from him.

The white fragility and victimhood here is astounding. If OH goes down, so be it. If OH stays up, then even better.

But trying to play the victim of social efforts to improve our society is the ultimate "snowflake" move. This entire thread is an exercise of performative woe-is-me nonsense, especially the "my son is a cop" schtick. Policing is the mechanism by which the state is able to maintain and enforce the systemic racism that is in place. Any cop that can't look in the mirror and ask themselves what they can be doing to be better at their job for everyone doesn't have the integrity to wear the badge. Serving the community is looking outside of yourself and listening to others instead of assuming you're always in the right and know better. Meanwhile, we have federal law enforcement agents invading cities as a direct result of political motivations. It doesn't get more tone-deaf than trying to play cops as the victim with this occurring as the backdrop.

Sports have always been a vehicle for political action and discussion. If that's incompatible with someone's fandom, then maybe they sports isn't for them.

And I'm guessing in another post you'll be blaming "snowflakes" for the politicizing of sports.

There are a million other sites that you can talk politics on.  This is the ONLY decent place I've seen to talk O's.  It serves a purpose now for us unfortunate O's fans - why intentionally mess it up?

C'mon, get it together.

If a guy grabs for your gun but doesn't actually *take your gun* that means he's still unarmed and YOU are armed.  That doesn't give you carte blanche to shoot him because he unsuccessfully took your gun.

Well if a guy grabs for your gun you don’t know his intent, but because he has already assaulted someone, his intent is probably violent. If I can retreat, I will, because I don’t want to shoot anyone.
Your comment implies that the claim is correct. He had assaulted  someone, and grabbed for the gun of a police officer who was trying to arrest him, and was shot. Based on that, Without any other information, I’d have to say it was justified.

HOWEVER, I want to talk baseball. Please please let’s not continue with this. I’m very willing to discuss privately, but I really want baseball.

baseball is supposed to help us get away from things, not throw us back into the middle of them.

edit: it’s really important to stress a couple of things. First of all, you don’t know that the guy doesn’t have a gun. You don’t know he doesn’t have a knife or weapon of any kind. And just because you do doesn’t mean anything. One of the things we learned in the army was how to disarm guys with guns when we don’t have one.

I have opinions on all of this, and in the end, no one will care. Not sure why the political wing of MLB is of such concern to the OP. The rigged financial landscape of the game and the product the Orioles have placed on the field for the majority of my 36 years as a fan is far more offensive. Expanding the playoffs to 16 games is a greater tipping point for this frustrated fan.

I don’t think that should happen either.

Its not helpful.

Tony has correctly left social and political issues largely off the site.  I get that it happens on occasion but for the most part, you don’t see it here...that’s a good thing.

One thing I would say is that if you could somehow have an ignore feature for an entire section, so that you literally never see it, that could be something that I would get more behind but I still think it’s better to leave it off overall.

I'm pretty sure it is the BLM movement marching the streets crying about being victims

If you are reaching for and trying to pull a weapon away from a police officer, is it completely reasonable for the police office to assume that weapon will be used against the police officer.  I'm no expert on use of force, but generally speaking (and all incidents will differ slightly), that seems to me to be a reasonable response.  Now, we could debate the appropriate use of force all day long but where you went wrong was to claim that the poster you were responding to was happy that someone died.  A statement like that doesn't help your argument or the discussion and only inflames emotions.

Just my two cents, I come here to escape from most of what is in this thread and to enjoy discussion on my Orioles!  Baseball is my great escape and love what this board contributes to that part of my life.  I do so hope the board can continue as it is.  If not, thanks @Tony-OH for many great years!

Disagree.  How else do you learn if your viewpoints on life are strong if they're not challenged?

That’s fine..but do you need to discuss those viewpoints here?

There are tons of political forums out there that you can do that on.

    • MLB Pipeline has released its top 50 ranking for next year’s J2 class. I did some searching to see who has been connected to which teams.  It doesn’t look like a great showing for the Orioles, who only have # 46 - Jose Pena.  Keep in mind that the Orioles have recently had a lot of success with $400-$600k bonuses in a notch below the top tier. There are still two that I have as question marks; please help fill in if you know.  Note that Royelny Strop is the son of former Orioles legend Pedro Strop. #       Player POS Linked Team 1 Josuar De Jesus Gonzalez SS Giants 2 Elian Pena SS Mets 3 Cris Rodriguez OF Tigers 4 Andrew Salas SS/OF Marlins 5 Yorger Bautista OF Mariners 6 Kevin Alvarez OF Houston Astos 7 Dorian Soto SS Red Sox 8 Maykel Coret OF Rays 9 Juan Cabada SS ? 10 Manny Cedeno SS Yankees 11 Ayden Johnson SS Athletics 12 Wilfri De La Cruz SS/3B Cubs 13 Brayan Cortesia SS Nationals 14 Diego Tornes OF Braves 15 Darwin Ozuna OF ? 16 Gabriel Davalillo C Angels 17 Liberts Aponte SS Reds 18 Kendry Martinez SS Giants 19 Raymer Medina SS Rays 20 Jhoan De La Cruz SS Padres 21 Cristopher Polanco SS Blue Jays 22 Johan De Los Santos SS Pirates 23 Santiago Leon SS Twins 24 Djean Macares OF Giants 25 Carlos Taveras OF Twins 26 Elian De La Cruz OF Diamondbacks 27 Royelny Strop OF Cardinals 28 Elorky Rodriguez OF Rangers 29 Warel Solano SS Rays 30 Moises Marchan C Royals 31 Harold Rivas OF Red Sox 32 Alejandro Cruz 3B White Sox 33 Larry Suero 2B/3B Rockies 34 Deivid Coronil SS Padres 35 Kenny Fenelon OF Brewers 36 Kenly Hunter OF Cardinals 37 Warren Calcano SS Royals 38 Carlos Alvarez LHP Padres 39 Kevin Defrank RHP Marlins 40 Hiverson Lopez C Guardians 41 Braylin Antunez OF Brewers 42 Haritzon Castillo SS Twins 43 Nieves Izaguirre SS Phillies 44 Cristopher Acosta SS Red Sox 45 Sadbiel Del Zine RHP Red Sox 46 Jose Pena SS Orioles 47 Heins Brito SS Guardians 48 Ramcell Medina SS Royals 49 Enry Torres C Reds 50 Teilon Serrano OF Dodgers
    • Frank "teaching them how to win" is such a famous story in franchise history it is natural to wonder if this group needs that same guy, with Manny Machado a fairy tale guy if you happen to be more invested in players who played townball for your town for awhile. Who on the 1964-65 Orioles didn't know how to win? fWAR suggests the Bats leaders those years were Brooks, Boog and Aparicio, and the Arms leaders were Pappas, Bunker, Barber and McNally. We're blessed with two franchise caliber young guys right now.    Who's winning skill is most in need of bolstering?    Are Gunnar and Adley as bad as Brooks and Boog? If you aren't more invested in players who played townball for your town but are more invested in players you scientifically decided on and won championships for you, that's why I think if Elias recommends a very big contract to any free agent this winter, Bregman has an edge on Burnes and Santander.    About once a decade we get some kind of Albert Belle or Miguel Tejada or Chris Davis thing around here.
    • You mean like spank the yankees a couple times this week??
    • I notice Coby Mayo listed as a RF.
    • Astros admit it is a knee sprain for Yordan and he is out the Mariners series, with hoped for return at the Guardians Friday. He will play the playoffs and I guess benefit from that infielders on the dirt rule, as otherwise defenses might have been able to put all of them well on to the grass like Pujols at the end. Mariners got the must opener with "just" Bryce Miller - now they have Logan Gilbert and George Kirby tonight and tomorrow afternoon against Yordan-free lineups to try and make the weekend interesting.
