He wasn't on Covid watch then.

He worked out on Tuesday, expressed concerns about playing and said he planned to wear a mask at first base, then on Wednesday he went off the grid. It seems like a wild coincidence for him to have caught Covid during that window...

Perhaps the team gave him 48 hours to decide whether he wanted to opt out.

That was my thought. Maybe not 48 hours but Davis is deciding whether he will play. After reading about his daughter’s condition, I’d be surprised if he plays.

This post is going to be a little long, but it's something I wanted to get off my chest in regards to Chris Davis. He was good/great when we were competitive. From 2012-2016 was our competitive window in my opinion. During that time, Chris Davis was worth 17.9 WAR. Let's say that one WAR was worth 7 million dollars (I think it's been calculated at more than that now). So during those five years he was worth about 125 million dollars. We paid him fifty million dollars. Do you think Peter Angelos ever had the thought to say "Gee Chris, we are going to pay you 75 million more dollars, we really underpaid you man"!

So the man made the money when he could make it, just like I would have. There's not a chance I would walk away from a single dollar of my contract. No doubt, he has been terrible since 2017. Just doing some rough calculations, he has been worth negative 5.5 WAR not including this season. So he has still provided a net positive of 12 or so WAR over the course of his contract. Not including this season, we have paid Chris Davis about 120 million dollars for these 12 wins. So yeah, the contract didn't work out. He's earned something like 30-35 million more than he has been worth. By the time the contact is over, it will look even worse. But here's the kicker. His contact from 2017-now isn't stopping us from being competitive. If we had to pick a time to have an albatross of a contact, this is the best time. His 23 million dollar salary could be used to get us a couple of good pickups, or one close to elite player. That might win us an extra 7-8 games over the course of the season if I am being generous. Where does that get us? So we win 68 games instead of 60?

I agree with the posters that have stated that Chris Davis isn't blocking anyone right now. The best thing we can do is see if he can become a .700-.725 first baseman with good defense. Mountcastle isn't up and let's not pretend that giving someone like Nunez or Stewart more at bats is of some vital importance. I'm not happy with the contract, but he's not the biggest reason we are failing. We didn't net much from trading our stars. Britton, Manny, Bundy, and others I'm forgetting didn't get us one top level prospect (in my opinion). We traded guys like Hader and Davies among others. Our farm system is average even with high draft picks. We play in a division where we are without a shadow of a doubt the least talented team in the A.L. East.

I just wanting to put things in a different perspective. I wish Chris would learn to bunt and listen to advice and change his approach at the plate. I still wish him the best, and let's hope that he is taking days off for reasons unrelated to COVID.

Well instead of paying Davis, they could have extended their competitive window by paying.... literally anyone else (but let’s say any of Cruz, Markakis, Miller, Machado).

He's got a -1 OPS+ and has been worth -.3 rWAR in three games.

In three games, it is possible to look good and yet have bad results.    I think I’ve only seen a couple of his at bats (one of which happened to be his double off the Monster), so I really couldn’t say if he’s looked good or not.    He’s only struck out once, so that’s a plus.    I have no real idea how hard he’s been hitting the ball.

What I was trying to say is Chris Davis isn't keeping us from being competitive, and if we spent the 23 million on stars we still wouldn't be competitive. The amount of hate directed at the guy is amazing to me. He isn't blocking any real talent either. The contract didn't work out on the back end, but that's the risk you take with long term contracts. I'm frustrated with his performance as well, but what can be done at this point but hope that he somehow bounces back to a replacement level player with decent defense? I think that's about his upside, and when looking at our roster, he's not going to be keeping us from competing. Last year we had Means, Cashner, and Wojo end the year under a 5.00 ERA. I don't see us having three starters that can do that this year, and it looks like Means is still recovering. Trot him out there and see if he can somehow bounce back a bit. He doesn't look as lost as I have seen him before.

Machado would not have fit into that set of choices.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes 7/161 in January 2016 (or even 10/230). He ended up getting 3/32.5 during 2016-18, so that’s 4/128.5 for the FA years. Seems fair on both sides.

The contract wasn’t even good on the front end. Ultimately we don’t know what the team would have looked like then or now if the money was allocated elsewhere. As far as I’m concerned he deserves the derision he gets, given his absolute stubbornness over the last few years to even admit his situation and make changes.

It bothers me when folks try to turn their disdain for a player into a perceived character flaw rather than just being angry about their play.

(not saying there aren't character flaws worth disliking)

    • That Jimmy Fallon movie was Fever Pitch.  Came out in late 2004 I think, because they had enough time to have the last scene being him and Drew Barrymore on the field in St. Louis celebrating the World Series win.  It actually was a really good movie at the time. But because the Red Sox and their fanbase became completely insufferable beginning with that comeback against the Yankees and carrying all the way through their 4 championships without so much as a loss in the World Series, it is hard for me to still enjoy it. But the underlying premise and that question of what has your favorite team ever done for you definitely resonated and certainly does even more so now with the Orioles.  And for Os fans the answer to that question is over the last 40 years, they haven't done much at all.
    • I have 13 game plan. Last year I was refunded. I hope I am this year.    The Ravens used to keep your money for playoff games not played and people complained. They stopped doing it. It’s pretty unethical in my opinion they keep the money towards next year. You can use that money for something else and make payments when they are due. Instead a business getting handouts from the state keeps your money.    The fact that you didn’t get playoff tickets due to this is alarming. They should wake up and be called out on this. It’s not acceptable.
    • I didn't watch the Astros or Os press conferences, mainly because I didn't want to look at or hear anything Elias or Hyde said. But I imagine that Houston fans are going to be far more accepting of how things ended than our fans are (or should be). The Astros fan has had a pretty charmed life (cheating stigma aside) since the last time we won a playoff game.
    • According to park factors, OPaCy was friendlier overall to righties compared to lefties. This is the second time in three season that has been the case. But it’s way friendlier to lefties in terms of hitting homers.
    • Trade Mullins & Mountcastle. Let O’Hearn go.  Sign Juan Soto
    • As someone who attended 15 games this year in section 80, and watched numerous games on TV, I might have had the chance at 3 home runs.   RHB are trying to work the ball towards the bullpen versus dead pulls.   OPACY, due to the summer humidity, is still the homer dome in the summer time.  But this was supposed to be our benefit to stack the lineup with LHB, and it was also proved that a team could stack their playoff roster with LHP to neutralize it.   I think the dimensions are going to be the way they are for a while, and I think the pitchers are going to be fine with it overall.  There were far too many ‘cheap’ home runs from RHB on high pop ups, but also off the end of the bat from LHB.
    • The Diamondbacks have 125 million in 10 players. Would they really want to have at $155-$165 million in 11 players of a $199 million payroll (their 2023 amount)?   https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/payroll/_/year/2025/sort/cap_total2
