Cashner removed from rotation after compiling 8.00 ERA in 30 innings.

The 2021 Red Sox don't control Mookie Betts, have a low ranked farm, and owe $130M to Age-35 Price, JD Martinez, Eovaldi, Pedroia, Age-32 Sale and Bogaerts.

I think I think we'll be better than the Red Sox in 2 years.  I would be entertained by Orioles fans going into full "We love you Mookie" recruitment mode in the year ahead.  He's a year ahead of the Lindor, etc 2022 class that has a bunch of candidates for the Rutschman bookend, but it'll be a good sign if during next year goofing around with that kind of stuff isn't completely ridiculous.

I love the theory, but it's hard to see Baltimore outbidding the Red Sox and the rest of the majors for a premier talent like Betts.

Maybe you can use how well he hits at Oriole Park as a selling point, but then again...the Orioles' pitching staff is likely the reason for that and not getting to hit against the Orioles anymore could be quite the downside.

Betts' year last year was incredible, but he's on a great 5 year run. I decided to look it up. Then I looked up Trout for grins and jollies. His worst WAR was 7.2. It's because WAR is a counting stat and he only played 114 games. His OPS that year was 1.071. Dude is incredible. (I know I know, breaking news)

Of course there will be tremendous demand for him across the game - the point is more that perhaps the 2021-2023 Red Sox are shaping up to be almost as inappropriate a spot for a regular MVP candidate's end-of-prime as the 2019-2021 Orioles were/are for Manny Machado's.  They will still have Bogaerts/Devers/Benintendi though.

2021 is pushing it but I'll be disappointed if by the offseason before 2022 we aren't in position to be a valid bidder for a superstar to push the Rutschman group forward.  Heaven knows we will have the payroll space.

The Orioles were 26th in revenue last year behind the Pirates and just ahead of the Royals. There's absolutely zero chance they're going to make any splurge signings especially while Davis is still under contract. Plus I believe the Angelos family lost their ass when they went "all-in" from 2013-2017 which is why they've been so cheap the last couple years. They're trying to make up for the loss in operating income from the Buck-Duquette era.

Not likely at all.  Maybe tapped into a bit more of that MLBAM money then they wanted but I hardly think they actually lost money.

    • .289 BABIP this year.  It was .410 in Bowie last year.
    • As much as it bothers you (and all of us as fans) I promise you that Mike Elias, Hyde and the rest of the organization are less concerned about the right now and more concerned about the long-term development of the player(s) and what is in the best interest of the team for an October run. I understand the frustration but we're poking at a rookie player who is excelling in several areas (defense and baserunning, chase rate, etc.) who is not hitting as well as we all would like him to be hitting. The All-Star catcher disappearing for two weeks, the All-Star infielder disappearing for two weeks, the All-Star RF disappearing for two weeks, the pitching deficiencies, etc. etc. are more concerning to me than CC struggling through half of July. He's on pace to hit close to 20 homers in his rookie campaign, could win a GG in the outfield this year and is (surprisingly?!) looking like a rookie at the plate a lot. I am not remotely surprised by that.
    • Not saying there is no chance they are dealing Bassitt but all indications are they are committed to trying to win next year.
    • Put into clearer terms, 20 CF’s have more than 450 PA’s since the ASB last year. Mullins is tied for 18th in WAR (with Adam Duvall). Only Jack Suwinski has a lower WAR (and wRC+) in that timeframe.  I don’t know if it’s the fact that people have turned on Cowser after his past few months or that they want to cling to Mullins performance from 2021-2022. But for all the begging on this board to play/promote prospects more, this argument to keep playing one of the worst CF’s in the league the past year over Cowser is pretty wild. For all the talk of Cowser struggling since May 1st, he has a 0.7 WAR in 205 PA’s since then (tied with Langford). Mullins is at -0.1 WAR in 183 PA’s in that same time frame.
    • If it’s only about winning games, why not option Mullins?  Why not get Mayo up for Mateo or Urias?  Why play all these vets as often as they are  during these terrible slumps many have been in?  Why play McCann so much? None of you guys want to talk about that stuff. You want to put all the blame on the best defensive player we have, who also has excellent speed and a guy who has a lot of batted ball data that suggests he’s doing better than stats show.    There is no understanding of development. It’s just, be good right now or go away. But that logic doesn’t apply across the board.  The inconsistency and hypocrisy by people on this board is astounding. It’s like listening to a local call in show.
    • He is a 5th infielder because we have Gunnar Henderson. Look around the league. Cleveland is deploying a guy with 600 OPS at shortstop. Volpe OPS 666, Red Sox need shortstop, Rays need shortstop, Mariners need a shortstop. There are about 7 or 8 shortstops in the league that can hit. The average catcher OPS for 2024 is 690.
