#Brewers release High-A 3B Nick Delmonico, whom they acquired from #Orioles for Francisco Rodriguez in July 2013 #TransactionsBA

Signed by the White Sox.

Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said Delmonico was released because the organization had lost contact with him.

"We couldn't contact him," said Nichols. "He wouldn't return calls. We couldn't find him.

Nick Delmonico has a blemish or two on his record but the White Sox feel the just-signed minor leaguer is worthy of a second chance.

A player the White Sox previously sought in trade discussions, Delmonico, who signed Friday, still must serve eight games of the 50-game suspension he received last July after he tested positive for an amphetamine.

The Milwaukee Brewers reportedly released Delmonico in part because they were out of contact with the third baseman. But White Sox assistant general manager Buddy Bell said he has spoken directly with Delmonico, who Baseball America listed as the No. 12 prospect in the Brewers’ system before last season and MLB.com ranked 18th. Delmonico is expected to attend a minor league mini-camp with the White Sox beginning on Feb. 24 in Glendale, Ariz., Bell said.

“I like the player and have known of him for quite some time,” Bell said. “We’re not going to pay a whole lot of attention to what’s happened in the past.

“In our minds, it’s not serious enough to make us shy away. Those are lessons learned hopefully.”

Bell said the White Sox had previously asked the Orioles about Delmonico any time the teams discussed a trade. Bell thinks Delmonico’s past can be attributed to poor decisions made by a young player and the White Sox want to give him a chance to prove it.

“We’re excited to have him,” Bell said. “There’s a lot of upside. It’s a good situation for Nick.

“It’s up to him how much he wants it. He’s talented.”

Markakis has arrived at #Braves camp

Markakis hopes to be ready by opening day, but not a certainty

Markakis was only cleared this week to run and work out extensively, at 8-week mark after neck surgery

Markakis said team knew before he signed that he would have surgery

Full beard. He and Markakis both.

"Opening day is a goal," Markakis said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's one of those things you work for and try to get there as far as injuries. It's not something you want to rush. Neck surgery is pretty serious so you don't want to rush it. I will have six weeks to do my thing and try to get ready for opening day."

"I'm not going to try to rush it," said Markakis, who said the Braves were aware of his impending neck surgery when he signed. "I've got six weeks. I've had some injuries in the past and it didn't take me long to pick it back up and get back into the swing of things. I am going to start at the bottom right now and work my way up."

This may not warrant its own thread, but is one of the more funny/awesome/ridiculous things I've seen in a while: Alfredo Simon really does drive a totally chrome Mercedes Benz that looks like a real life Hot Wheels car. It must be pretty great to have enough money that you can do stuff just because the 12-year-old version of yourself would think its super totally cool.

Ha! Simon is probably just a huge fan of Star Wars, couldn't figure out how to drive a Millennium Falcon, so he settled on an Earth version of the Naboo Royal Starship. But that gets him some demerits for the reference to a prequel. tpm23.jpg
