At least today they had a four run lead and a burnt out bullpen. Not the case Sunday.

Why did Hyde take Coulombe out after three batters in the 7th?  The situation was one out, runners on first and third, tie game.  The next hitter (Arias) is right handed but he hits lefties very poorly.  The folllwing hitter (Brennan) is left handed.  Coulombe is one of your best relievers, and the matchups are favorable.  Instead, Hyde brings in...Jorge Lopez?????  The guy has done nothing to inspire confidence all season, and sure enough he lets the lead run score.   

Even if there was a better righty available to bring in, I question the idea of letting one of your best relievers face only three batters.  The bullpen is fried as it is, and changing pitchers frequently means more stress on your bullpen.

Coulombe's outing: walk, wild pitch, strikeout that should have been a walk, sharp single that Westburg knocked down but couldn't finish.

He's not really eating them, though. Hyde is treating him like a one inning guy. He's not Bruce Zimmermann or Cole Irvin.

Irvin should never have been sent down. Right move was to release Lopez back to the dumpster he belongs in and keep Irvin up.

I'm not going to criticize Hyde because he has been really good most of the year and he is going to win manager of the year..... However, Baseball 101, never put the go ahead run on base

I'm not talking about today. I'm saying he needs to be DFA as soon as possible. Bring up Zimmermann until we can get Irvin or Krehbiel back.

I thought it was a solid move. We didn't want to burn any more guys in extras. Win the game or go home. Cano has bad splits against LHB so set up the double play and go after the RHB. Good move, bad result.

I know that's what the book says.  I actually thought that walking Brennan was the right move.  You are trying to win the game in the 9th (the O's would have been in a terrible position if the game went to the 10th), and in principle Cano has a better chance of getting a strikeout or weak contact against a right-handed hitting backup catcher.   It's not Hyde's fault that Cano made a terrible pitch against Fry.
