I'm torn.

On one hand I don't want to lose anyone on the 40 for him.

On the other hand it would be hilariously hypocritical of Elias to promote him to the majors.  So much so folks would be forced to wonder if it was a mandate from ownership.

1B or not I think their hand would be forced to call him up if he has a great season. It would be too surreal not to. In that case the owners would be right.

The surreal thing would be him actually having a great season.

You know that Bill Veeck did that once, right?

I know that bill did a lot of stuff but no, I didn’t know that. I do think it would be a fascinating fan activity for one of the last games of the season. I think even the other team would have fun with it. I think they also win, ha ha

Not now of course but I want to see him in an Orioles uniform this year! Who’s with me?

I'm with you.  Bring him up for a cup of coffee in September.    He's competent at least.  It will be awesome and a nice tip to Cal.  And better this year when we suck.  Next year we could be in the playoff chase!

But what if he's baby Yaz all over again?

Don’t get me started on Yaz…likely much different situation but he’s hitting at Norfolk now and it would be great to see him this year in an Orioles uniform (as long as it doesn’t cost us anyone pivotal, like Armstrong or Laskins?, on the 40 man).

I mean he's down to 294/333/412 now, is that worth putting a first baseman on the 40 man?

First he needs to keep hitting well enough to keep the whiff of plausibility.   I'm more agnostic on the thing itself actually happening compared to how it would be positioned if it does.   I confess the first night I saw Ryan hitting .350 at AAA - my immediate reaction was, "That has to happen at some point playing out this year's string".

Cherry on top of a September game with Mancini/Santander still here and a Hall/Rutschman battery, okay.   He's in the Jay Flaa tier.

Some good 2022 players sold off for 2025 wins, Adley on the Kelenic track and Ryan Ripken feature videos all month on MASN, oy....

Yeah because it sanctifies the deep respect for winning baseball the Orioles have had these past 3 years? Please, spare me.

Here is my point: Ryan Ripken has shown, over a lengthy period, that he is not a very good baseball player.   The fact that he opened the 2021 season with a few good games doesn’t change that.   I’m sure he’s had other stretches of a week where he played decently, but overall, he’s been bad.

If he’s hitting well at Norfolk after two months, maybe this conversation becomes relevant.   It would be kind of cool if that happened and there was a reason to have a serious discussion about bringing Ripken up.   But I am not holding my breath - the guy has a long track record that says that won’t happen.

Current line after his two game slump: .250/.318/.350.  He's 27 and has a career minor league OPS of .613.  He's a first baseman.  Calling him up is nonsense.  All of the available evidence says he'd be lucky to play as well as 2019 Chris Davis.

I've seen my share of "oh my goodness he's four for 13 he's Babe Ruth!" posts, but this is near peak insanity.

So you wanna see Ryan Ripken in Baltimore because....?

If his last name was Lawrence or Sanchez or something other than Ripken would you be in favor?
