Cedric Mullins as a CF

Recommended Posts

I came here to post the question of Cedric, trade value and trade return.

He hits, he runs, he steals bases, he defends very well, and if he doesn’t throw hard, he throws accurate, and as everyone knows, catching the ball is much more important than throwing it( although, yes, we would like to have someone who does both.)

Name a team that wouldn’t love to have that?

Now name a team that would love to have it, and currently doesn’t?

Now name a team that would like to acquire it from us?

I’m not positive but he might be our most valuable trade chip

I've been saying for a while. Hays is probably a better CFer, Mullins is just faster.

I take that ALL back!

Catch reminded me of Devo's catch over the wall years ago. Different direction, different kind of catch.... but came out of NOWHERE into the TV frame and CAUGHT the ball. Just jaw dropping.

Still young. I'd rather keep him. Even with our glut OFers. He's at least one of the best of them. Maybe THE best.

A leadoff hitter the Orioles have been looking for since Brian Roberts suffered that concussion.  He is fun to watch.

Everyone on this roster can be had, IMO.  That said, I like Mullins and it would take a decent package for me to be alright with giving him up.

He still doesn't walk enough, but that's okay.  He can hit a little bit and keep the defense honest with the bunt.  Has a bit of pop and can go get it in the outfield.  He's making his way into a fixture in CF if he can keep hitting like he has.

In regards to who he reminds me of, Brady Anderson, strictly in the sense that like Brady, he could be a late bloomer.  I think people forget how awful Brady Anderson was in his first few seasons here.

When Devereaux did that, and I won't even try to guess the year, catching a ball over a wall was pretty unusual. Now, with practically every batter trying to launch the ball, shorter fences of scalable height, and so many outfielders who are tall or can jump or both, it happens all the time. If I took an hour or two, I bet I could come up with 30 or 40 of those catches in recent years, with the outfielder racing back to the wall and waiting to time and place his jump, and a like number of near-misses.

If I've seen a catch like Mullins', including the backhand extension because Cruz wasn't thoughtful enough to hit the ball to left center, I can't remember it.

If Brady didn't have his breakout season in 1992, he was on his way to getting DFA-ed or traded to another team for a box of baseballs.

Regarding Mullins, I think he has more value to the Orioles than as a potential trade piece. Teams that trade for Mullins are going to look at him as a prospect who was struggling and has busted out with a couple very good months.

Now if a team does offer a trade package under the guise that Mullins really is a 4+ WAR center fielder, then Elias has to seriously consider trading him. But as a fan it's going to suck if Mullins, Means and Mancini all get traded this summer.

Hays had that one. Which is kinda why I ranked him ahead of Mullins. but Mullins just ran SO FAR for that ball, and back-handed and sliding on the Warning Track so he didn't kill himself... just amazing. Words don't do it justice.

Maybe these words...

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

That is one of the few poems I have completely memorized. When I recite it though, I always get mad at the very first word, “oh” he could’ve used almost any other word and it would’ve worked, but read it out loud and see how awkward it is. Still a beautiful poem, though.

Here's a good one where the outfielder didn't get to make the catch:

I like him too, he may be the most watchable guy on the team. He reminds me of Adam Jones, but he is faster than AJ.

I don’t wanna trade him either But he’s going to be in demand, and no mistake

How does he remind you of Jones?  Besides the fact that they are both black and play CF, I see almost no similarities in their game.

Well, they did wear similar uniforms.  If Mullins starts swinging at every low and outside slider, I could see some similarity, but then again Adam batted righty, and Mullins now is just a lefty.  Hmm, I'm not sure they could be more different, tbh.
