I'm starting to think we are 4-5 years away from competing for real

What kind of extension do you think they should look to sign D.L. Hall for?

Not one clue. I don't have the information available to make smart decisions about that.

But even though I'm not the one to make those decisions, I do believe the O's should be considering possibilities and I think they will. May not work out, but I hope they're at least checking.

Well you seem to acknowledge that the O's will do their due diligence at the least, and then you want to criticize them just in case they're not doing their doing the diligence?

Seems odd.

BTW, Hall has a stress fracture in his throwing elbow.  Perhaps it's things like this that suppress contract extensions for MiL prospects?

I mean his career BABIP is 319.

The various projections on Fangraphs have him at 294-313.

So maybe less than 362?

His xBA is .282.   That’s not just based on normalizing BABIP, but based on quality of contact.

His xwOBA is .351 compared to wOBA of .394.

I do think that speed probably accounts for a bit of the difference, but certainly not all of it.

Still, if you told me Mullins would have a .351 wOBA for the next four years, I’d sign for it in blood.   Even taking any luck away, he’s been very good.

How on earth do you get "I want to criticize them" out of this?

The only point to the whole discussion was that it wasn't unreasonable to discuss an extension with someone in the minor leagues.

You've twisted about as far as possible to create an argument out of this. You go have fun with it.

How could I be arguing with you when you refuse to take a position?  LOL.

Your point seems to be they should "consider" these extensions.  Again, that is so nebulous as to mean nothing.

How do you know they haven't?

Yeah, I don't expect Mullins to hit .320 every year from here on out.  But that isn't going to be largely a product of his BABIP.

If he's hitting .280, he's still an all-star.

I don't. You started this by saying they never would.

Well, I gave reasons for it.  It's been done.  Including by this FO.  It hasn't worked out yet.  It's risky.  It doesn't seem to do the club much in terms of saving money.

I believe they have considered it, and have rejected it, because it doesn't make sense- which is exactly why nobody else does it either.

I think they have walked that back a bit and called it a "stress reaction".  Message board doctors please let us know the difference.

But I think his minor league season is kaput.  Fall ball might not be out of the picture.

I'm sorry to hear about it.  Regardless, it isn't a positive development for him.

My point of course isn't specifically about him.  However, with the CBA such as it is, and, maybe even more importantly, with how it remains unresolved going forward, it makes little sense to sign MiLers to extensions.

Especially for pitchers.

A position player would be way less of a risk. Pitchers break all the time.

A stress reaction is sort of the precursor to a stress fracture. Still needs to be shut down to let it heal, but it's not as bad as if he broke the bone

He's got a 362 BABIP.

If he's for real he's soon to be out of the probable price range of the team.

If you could get a team to pay you have to look at it.

If that's true, the O's probably shouldn't be in the professional baseball business.

    • You can't get a guy like that and have it not hurt. Whatever random scraps you won't miss will not get it done. Surprised Mateo wasn't included in the deal.
    • Here’s the thing though - it doesn’t matter what any of us think. It’s about what ME, Hyde and Co. believe is best for the org and if you’ve ever heard JW in media or spoken with him in person, I promise you that he would run through a brick wall if Hyde asked him to do so. There would be no convincing. He would say “RF, skip? Alright” and trot his ass out to RF and play as hard there as anywhere else on the field.
    • This assessment is based on what? I’ve seen both players a considerable amount and have seen nothing to suggest that Basallo can’t stick at Catcher. In fact, the arm is plus-plus and his pop time has decreased from the day that he was signed. Whether he sticks at catcher has much less to do with his ability to do so and as much, if not more to do with whether or not they sign Adley long-term and/or the org values Basallo’s hit tool more than his positional value, which projects extremely high. People hang onto Mayo’s size. Yes, he’s 6’5 but he’s incredibly athletic and has the best infield arm in the org outside of Gunnar. He is in no way Vlad Jr. at the hot corner. As I posted earlier, he has great hands for third, the internal clock is fine (he’s rarely rushed or has to rush because of the arm) and moves laterally very well, not just for his size but in general. I posted two years ago that Gunnar would stick at third. I was the only poster last year who argued that Cowser could play plus defense in center. I was right about Holliday’s defensive limitations. I don’t mention these things to be like “told ya so” but I do know what I’m talking about. With Mayo it’s not about ability. It’s about consistency which is what every passerby stuck on with Gunnar as a SS. I see nothing from a talent or ability perspective that suggests that Mayo’s best position is 1B.
    • With as poorly as Handley/Hunt have been playing since the Trade that brought Hunt to O's system and sent Perez (released two weeks ago) and Bauman (traded for Cash a couple weeks ago) to Seattle... along with how poorly Ardois is playing in AA and how Willems is in A+ (Don't let the occasional HR fool you before his groin/hamstring issue with recent IL stint)...  I thought I would take a peek at Baseball-Reference on what Basallo does at C, 1B and DH.  It is a pretty easy sort to get these of of BR: DH:  26 games, 103 PA, 97 AB, 23 Hits.  0.223 AVG/ 0.272 OBP/ .340 SLG / 0.612 OPS Catcher:  30 games, 131 PA, 113 AB, 28 Hits.    0.214 AVG/ 0.344 OBP/ .469 SLG / 0.813 OPS 1B:  22 games, 93 PA, 87 AB, 30 Hits.  0.323 AVG/ 0.387 OBP/ .517 SLG / 0.904 OPS His first 8 games were DH then a mix until 20.  12 of 19 were at DH and 7 were at 1B.  Since catching started, 30G at C, 14 @ DH, and 15@1B.   His numbers (ALL COLUMNS) are best at 1B but his AVG is worst at C.  (his HR numbers and BB numbers really help with his C numbers which came after his 'cold' start also.  But if the intent is for him to catch and give Adley a rest...  Are we expecting his BB/K ratio to stay the same skipping (as some twitter twits suggest) AAA?  Do we expect his AA power and OBP numbers to stay the same when he is catching in MLB?
    • Then you don't even pick up the phone and make the call.
    • The Dodgers need SP in a big way. His FIP is 4.97 and 6.4 K/9. I think every starter we're throwing out there on a nightly basis is an upgrade from Paxton. They are banking on 36-year-old Kershaw to replace him, I guess we'll see what he has left in the tank.
    • IMO you are overselling Norby and Stowers with the “might not be slam dunk future All Stars” comment. No it is unlikely that either are all-stars. But rather solid big-leaguers. The issue as you said is because of DET’s terrible offense, they are going to want some difference makers.  They are probably going to want one of Holliday/Mayo/Basallo AND one of Kjerstad/Cowser. That is the group of likely future all-stars IMO.
