If that's is the case, they should sell the team. There's is not magical pipeline where you can have a roster of players earning the minimum, or somewhere just above that.

Tampa is currently leading the AL East by 5 games.   They have figured out how to have  a magical pipeline and have one of the lower payrolls.  But 4 years to FA will hurt them as much or more than the O's.

Tampa would have to trade a big chunk for their team at 3 years of service.   That includes Glasnow, Lowe, Margot, Yarbrough, Wendle, Kittredge, Diaz,  Anderson, Phillips, Meadows and more.

Good thing that have a top farm team in place so they can do exactly that.

Right, that’s what they want and they believe that if the lower tier teams are spending on those guys, that those teams will be better and more competitive.

And it’s nonsense.

I keep trying to hammer the same point home. This isn’t college football where there is a constant flow of talent in and out. Nick Saban doesn’t say screw it we won’t recruit any WR’s we have enough. It’s a constant cycle.

These decisions have long term consequences. Look at Brian Roberts. Good player on bad teams. It wasn’t his fault. If the Orioles had dealt him instead of staying here is his life any worse off? When a bad team signs a FA and they don’t win they have that player the length of the deal. Not to get off topic but that is why I supported the Andrew Miller deal.  I would rather have him in 14 than Erod on non contenders.

Then you don't.

You take a team with a six win guy and two one win guys and replace them with two three win guys and a two win guy.

You can’t force a player to stay. If Adley wants to leave you can’t lock him in the warehouse.

You aren’t getting it.  Your point is meaningless.  It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not.

The purpose of the union is to protect the players and they feel this is the best way to protect a majority of their players.  It didn’t matter that it’s dumb for the owners.  It matters that it’s smart for the players and that’s what they care about.

It will not be a top farm system long if they have to graduate them faster.

It just gives the high payroll team all the advantage.

Lol..who cares where the farm system is ranked?

You are completely off base on this.  Every single team in the sport can afford to keep their best players.   If you are now incentivized to sign them earlier, you likely save money.

You can still trade them as their price increases but they may actually have more value now.

They will still be replacing their talent with fresh talent.

They will still have whatever advantages in scouting and development that are allowing them to be successful now.

Those days are over. You can’t whine and say we want a free market with no cap and then whine when lower tier players don’t make any money.

They aren’t over if the players get what they want.  They aren’t over if you have a salary floor, as they should have imo.

Their window will not be as wide as say the Nats. They aren’t signing a Scherzer. For all the Nats drafts that got them going their money got them over the top. That is where the Rays are at a disadvantage.

They can still be competitive, not saying that. You are correct obviously in that nothing beats intelligence.

Tampa with their low revenue can't sign  players to long term high price contracts.

And you can bet that the O's will follow their lead and not do it either.  That is where the O's are headed.  The O's are just 3 steps behind them.

Tampa absolutely can…and has done it. (See Longoria for example)
