Keegan Akin 2022

Two days after being denoted, Akin returns and throws three scoreless innings, including bailing out Dean Kremer from a first and third, nobody out situation.  Best he’s looked in a long time.  I’m glad he had a chance to return and have a great outing rather than ending the season on the sour note of a demotion.

I wonder if the "demotion" was a planned/paper move. Was Akin ever seen with the Tides?

No, he was put on the taxi squad after his demotion.   But I don’t think they planned for Urias to have a season-ending injury.   Reactivating Akin in case of an injury was probably always a contingency plan.

A scoreless inning for Akin today.  Assuming he won’t pitch in game 2, he finishes with a 3.20 ERA in 81.2 IP.  He threw the second-most relief innings in the majors this year.

I really liked Akins’ approach this year.  He just decided he was going to throw strikes and not nibble.  He worked fast and didn’t screw around.  Threw 70% strikes on the year, cut his BB rate nearly in half, and allowed fewer hits and homers, too.  He faded a little in the second half but threw three scoreless outings to end the year.  All in all, an excellent season for Akin.

I remember one year Buck burnt Pedro Strop out so much in the first half he barely could use him in the second half, but then he was able to get a little bit out of him in October.    That's kind of how Akin's 2022 felt here.

Bradish-Kremer flashed enough I still hope for more, but watching Baumann this afternoon he's a guy I'm interested to scale down to ~50 pitches/turn and see what happens.
