Interesting catching tidbit from Hyde

That would kinda be the thing they would keep proprietary, no?

Well, some things would be out in the open: use of pitchers, positioning of fielders, training techniques, roster construction, putting crabmeat on pretzels. Others I would hope to hear about well after the fact.

I've read the first. I don't know as much about Richards as I probably should. Thanks.

I thought it was clear that I am hoping there will be some innovation as well as judicious use of other teams' ideas as part of the rebuild. The baseball brilliance of 40 to 60 years isn't going to help.

I get it but I do think Richards should get more notice than he does.

If you ever listen to the Patrick Jones podcast, he was a code for the Orioles last year. He never makes the podcast about the Orioles, but he often talks about a bunch of innovative stuff that they are doing.

I don't know it. Thanks.

I sympathize with those incredibly frustrated with MASN, credentials, information for fans, general relationship with non-inside people and the ML payroll, but I'm EXTREMELY optimistic about what they're doing from a position player development perspective.

That also gives me faith on what they're doing with pitching, but I just don't see as many horses on that side.

It's an interesting strategy. It goes against what has been said for decades, but it makes sense for guys who just throw hard who might not have the best control. Instead of nibbling, just let it rip. But I wonder how this will impact arm injuries and also how much of this is based on "the crackdown."

On a side note, I remember some complaints from last season when Wynns was catching and would "move around" during the wind up and sometimes set up low (while Severino just wouldn't move unless the ball went directly to his glove.)

If he was instructed to do that (since he never did that in the Minors, ever), maybe they saw it didn't help or had some complaints about it as it WAS weird, maybe this was their way of correcting it?

I'll see if I can find it, but Glasnow did an interview about how when he first got to the Rays - they just told him to throw his best pitch in the middle of the plate. It's their big strategy at the moment, find guys with a plus pitch and just tell them to throw it.

Yep, this is my view of things as well, from the valid criticisms to the things to be optimistic about.

It's easy to say they don't draft enough pitching, but at the same time, it's looking like their hit rate on position players is going to be very good. So if that's where they feel most confident in having success, go for it. When you can rattle off 7-10 draftees who are moving through the system and on target to be big leaguers, you're doing something right. Adley, Stowers, Cowser, Westburg, Henderson, Ortiz, Mayo, etc. Like it's going to be disappointing if ALL of those guys aren't decent MLers, so I think that says something.

It figures the Rays would be one of the first teams to do that.

    • I disagree Mayo is one of the reasons the Orioles have not hit well.  Emmanuel Rivera, who has hit well with an .879 OPS since he joined the O's, has gotten the playing time over Mayo.
    • I was sort taking that as a fait accompli. Signing expensive long-term free agent deals for one dimensional sluggers heading into their 30s definitely does not seem like Elias's style, especially when an extra high draft pick (and accompanying extra bonus pool money) is the reward for not doing so.
    • Game 153, Sept. 19 Lots of notable defensive plays today.   Kjerstad made two excellent catches, one going back and towards the RCF alley that (per Kevin Brown) was a 50% probability catch, and another going back to the wall near the corner and making the catch at close to full speed.   Holliday snared a line drive at the top of his leap, and also made a nice backhand running catch of a soft fly into medium RF. Mullins made a diving catch in the 7th on a sinking liner that he got a great jump on.   In the 9th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Heliot hit a liner in the RCF gap that carried much further than it first appeared it would.   Mullins and Slater dove for it simultaneously and Slater actually gloved it for a second before it popped out while Slater landed on Mullins.  Luckily, the two base runners totally misread the play, and after Slater quickly scrambled to his feet and threw the ball in, the runner originally on 2B scored but the runner on 1st only advanced to 2B, and the batter had to stop at first.  The O’s were able to keep any further runs from scoring. One thing I’ve noticed about Manny Rivera is that he’s very slow charging bunts and slow rollers/choppers. He handled one bunt and one chopper in front of him today and both times the runner beat his throw rather easily, something that has happened a lot when Rivera has manned 3B.   I’m more than ready to have Urias -and/or Westburg back at the hot corner.
    • Don’t know what happened to him on here but I did meet him and some others from The Sun forums at the park on Matt Wieters first game as an Oriole. If I recall correctly his name was Patrick.  He seemed like a good dude but he did have his face painted and was wearing those big hulk hands…which did strike me as a little odd for a grown man but to each his own.
    • ….as long as it’s not us
    • Is it just me or did they sound the HR / walk-off siren before the ball actually went out?
