Could Gutierrez be at risk of DFA on May 2? (Edit: DFA'd on 1 May)

Same and at least Gutierrez can play good defense at 3B even if he never develops as a hitter. Odor and Owings bring zero to the team and never should have been signed.

2 errors today for the guy who's defense is his calling card.  If he didn't have so much competition for DFAs I'd say he's a lock.  But Owings, Odor, McKenna....all horrible.

Well, I certainly like Gutierrez better than the guy the O's had the first half of last year. BTW, bounced throw?? Should Mancini have gotten it (facetious reminder of last week's discussion on Mountcastle)? I am not a fan of Elias signings of players like Odor or Owings as place holders. And I am happier with Urias at 2nd. Nevin may not be a solution, but he's a better solution IMO. Martin, I'm not sure. I expect any ML'er to be able to catch the ball, you don't let poor D beat you.

Mateo .596 OPS, .274 wOBA, .308 xwOBA

Odor .577 OPS, .268 wOBA, .256 xwOBA

Urias .491 OPS, .229 wOBA, .342 xwOBA

Gutierrez .443 OPS, .219 wOBA, .319 xwOBA

Seems like both Urias and Gutierrez have been hitting in very bad luck, Mateo in moderately bad luck.   Odor on the other hand hasn’t been unlucky at all, just bad.    He should be the first to go IMO.   And even though I disliked that signing, I’m not someone who went into the season just assuming he’d be awful.  I held out a sliver of hope, which he’s basically crushed.

Looking at those OPS numbers, it's no mystery why the O's have struggled to score runs.  It's like carrying 4 of Chris Davis on the roster at one time.

I started drafting nearly these exact thoughts yesterday.  Gutierrez needs more PAs.  Mateo is about what we're seeing.  Odor should be gone (it's a shame he's taking PAs from Gutierrez).  I had included Owings in the mix too, but not many PAs and not good so far.

OBP isn't getting it done for these guys either.  I'd be happy if these guys just go on base.

Mateo - .294

Urias - .254

Gutz - .258

Mounty, Trey, and the sluggers need to get the SLG going too.  Woof so far...

So does this mean they are giving Nevin a clear shot at 3B?

There are two open spots on the 40 man roster now.

There's only one spot, technically, but there will be 2 once Wells goes on the 60-day.

I think this means Urias and Nevin seeing time at 3B, with Owings more squarely on the bench where his scrubby self belongs.

Owings might belong on Norfolk’s bench, but he has no business on a ML roster. Even if it is the Orioles.

    • So a “Pollyanna” then like me, @wildcard and others (joking of course) 😇 I’m in your camp but really wonder if Elias/Hyde and Co. can truly“flip the script” as @Just Regular alludes.
    • So thats because the extra space in the OF allows for more balls to fall in? If so, I don't really see an issue if its providing offense in a different way.
    • I'm neutral on it. I don't like how the old dimensions played like a wiffle ball field. Both teams have to play on it and the O's do have two good OF's so in that sense it helps us. RHH will probably hate it so very few would ever sign in Baltimore unless they thought the O's were in World Series contention. If they put it in the middle ground then the dimensions become like every other park and Im not sure I want that. At least Camden Yards plays different.
    • I agree with this.  It was a completely idiotic take to criticize the fans.  And Russo on MLB Network did as well.  Did those guys watch this team at all this year? They were under .500 for the last 88 games of the season.....the worst team in the AL East.  These were the home series they played over the last three months: Chicago Cubs (swept and outscored 21-2), Yankees (lost 2 of 3 and needed two Yankee errors to walk off the last one), San Diego (lost 2 of 3), Toronto (won 3 of 4), Washington (split 1 of 2), Boston (split 2 of 4), Houston (split 2 of 4), White Sox (won 2 of 3 but lost last one 8-1), Tampa (lost 2 of 3), San Fran (lost 2 of 3), Detroit (lost 2 of 3). What is that, 15 - 20 in their last 35 home games?  And then they top it off by losing to the Royals 1 - 0 in the first game?  So fans are supposed to be excited and encouraged by that stretch of baseball?   You want people to show up to games, play like the Padres. Don't have your prized prospects go bust, don't have your stars fall off a cliff, and learn how to play fundamental baseball instead of obsessing about each swing's potential exit velocity.
    • I agree and would add Cowser to that mix, since “we” aren’t sure if he becomes anything more than this iteration; I.e., good fielder with pop but lots of whiff.
    • I'll dislike it if the last out is some 29/30 bat off of Mountcastle's bat. Of the two which is more likely to conquer the wall?
    • We'll like it if the last out is ever some 29/30 ball off Aaron Judge's bat.
