Let’s Be Buyers

I’m not talking crazy and suggesting to sell the farm that we finally just built. But this team has swagger and I want to see it continue to be more competitive over the remainder of this season. Give up Odor for a bag of balls and call up Vavra. Give up some spare pieces that we don’t see as part of the future and add a competent SP. If GrayRod makes it back this year and we’re still in contention, let him pitch in Baltimore. I’m not ready to give up on this team making a Wild Card push this year.

No way Elias makes the Orioles buyers this season. Now a trade for a younger player who could be part of the future is possible, but that would require trading equal talent in return.

I see Elias trading off some veteran players to pick up more prospects to add to the talent pool in the farm system.

If the Orioles are at or near .500 at the deadline, they HAVE to be buyers. The whole point of fielding a baseball team is to make the playoffs and play for a championship. The rebuild is ahead of schedule.

They can still "sell" guys like Mancini, Santander, Lyles, and Tate, but they should target prospects/young players who are blocked with big teams (Dodgers, Yankees, Padres) and also fairly close to the majors (or at the majors but not getting regular playing time). If we can trade Tate, Mancini, and/or or Santander for someone like Ryan Pepiot, we should do it and immediately insert Pepiot in the rotation.

Elias is smart enough to trade away assets that don't have a future with this team, but also make a push towards a Wild Card. It doesn't have to be one scenario (buy) or another (sell). It can be both.

Part of the reason they have  "swagger" is because of Odor.

No way.  Once we get back to playing Eastern division teams, we will be playing .400 ball at best, Unfortunately.  Heck, even Boston is playing lights out for the last month or so.

We are leading the season series against Boston (5-3)

Competitive with Tampa (4-5)

Split with Toronto (2-2)

And fairing as well as anyone else against the Yankees.

We are 20 games out with 3 in our own division in front of us. If they buy a SP that has several years of control fine. But, they should still be looking to trade Trey, Santander, Tate, and Lopez is they get aggressive bidders.

And it would be foolish to chase the wild care….perhaps tempting for fans. I doubt Elias will cave to it.

I'd keep Tate, but otherwise I generally agree.

In fact, I think they could trade Mancini, Santander, and Lopez... Hopefully acquire a starter.... call up Vavra, Stowers and Henderson... and finish with a better record than had they kept the three.

I could see us trading Mancini, Santander, Mullins, Lopez, Tate and Lyles. Hopefully net a starting pitcher that can contribute immediately. Promote Stowers, Diaz,  Henderson, Westburg, Vavra , Hall and we could be just as competitive if not more.

What is a realistic deal that gets us a SP with multiple years of control? Probably means giving up more than spare parts.

Should be buying and selling.

When has that ever happened? Not trying to be snarky, just wondering if a team has ever approached the deadline as a buyer and a seller and successfully pulled off trades.

    • With a previous post in this thread I highlighted a selection of notable or memorable comps for our current Orioles. Now I wonder what it would look like to compare our best roster (from that selected list, in order of WAR) with the corresponding squad of not-all-stars.   Without further ado, here's our team alongside its historic counterparts: LF    Norby        Eugenio Suarez CF    Mullins        Kevin Kiermaier RF    Cowser        Ken Singleton 1B    Mayo        Bill Melton 2B    Holliday    Arky Vaughan SS    Ortiz        Jose Pagan 3B    Henderson    Bill Madlock C    Ruthschman    Ted Simmons DH    Westburg    Robby Thompson     Bench    Mateo        Greg Gagne     SP1    Bradish        Justin Verlander SP2    Kremer        Johnny Cueto SP3    Rodriguez    Jose Berrios SP4    Povich        Jarrod Washburn     SP5    Irvin        Scott McGregor RP1    Pham        Jeff Samardzija RP2    McDermott    Steve Renko RP3    Vespi        Graeme Lloyd RP4    Baker        Matt Albers Closer    Bautista    Trevor Hoffman Oddly enough, it's the starting rotation that appears the strength of our team of doppelgangers.
    • Regarding Cooper, he was a fantastic pitching coach for a long time, but the game simply passed him by.  Near the end of his tenure, after a tough season Giolito actually went and worked with Ethan Katz (our current pitching coach and his former HS pitching coach) and he came back new and improved.  Katz also got a ton of credit for developing Cease and getting Rodon to finally tap into his potential. A year ago I would have been high on Katz, but last year was such a disaster that I’m not sure what to think.  It’s clear he’s got a much more modern take on pitching than Cooper, but I also think the org in general is so behind the times when it comes analytics & biometrics that there is only so much he can do.  We don’t have a single voice driving an org wide pitching philosophy (which is evident in our PD system) or much of a pitching lab to get the most out of guys.  Hopefully that will change for the better with the addition of Brian Bannister. All that being said, I don’t believe for a second we get all we can out of our guys.  Katz obviously helped Giolito, Cease, & Rodon improve but these were all elite prospects acquired from other orgs.  We still struggle to unlock the next tier of guys, although I blame that on broader organizational issues than purely Katz.
    • I love this.  Most fans that go to the game live within 45 minutes of the ballpark I would suspect.  The good thing is you can get home by 10:00 most evenings.
    • I selfishly don't like it, I'm a displaced fan in the central time zone.  5:30 weeknight start times are rough for me, the games are usually over before I get home from the office.  But they should make decisions based on the people who might actually go to the games.
    • That's something that can only be determined in hindsight.  Lots of options and lots of flexibility this offseason to really set the team up for the next 2-3 years.  I'm very curious to see how it plays out.  Checking my crystal ball, I don't see Aroldis Chapman anywhere on the program
    • I agree and I don't want him on the team.  But I'm not sure this specific moment is more critical than say, when he picked Gunnar Henderson in the second round.
    • Perhaps he looked and doesn’t have the dough to spend or wants to part with the asking price for Cease or 1 year of the other guys rumored available.
