Adley Rutschman Skill

The throw Adley made to catch Tommy Pham today was otherworldly, both in terms of pop time and accuracy.   Throwing to 2B has been about the only part of his defensive game that hasn’t been particularly good so far, but that throw was outstanding.  Hopefully a sign of things to come.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, his throws to 3B have been lighting fast and deadly accurate.

I’d say he’s not in contention yet, but he’s coming on strong and could be in contention a month from now if August is as good as July was for him.  He was worth something like 1.3 rWAR over the last month.

I think team success will have a lot to do with ROY voting.  If Adley's numbers continue to climb and he somehow helps lead the team to a playoff spot he'll get strong consideration.

I'm extremely pleased with his game, but a bit surprised at the lack of homers thus far.  In the minors we saw him routinely hitting absolute moonshots.  Haven't really seen that at the MLB level yet.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a fair number of votes go to Adley from sportswriters looking to "punish" the O's for manipulating his service time. An unfortunate potential consequence of the new setup.

True, things could change.  I feel that most writers will chalk it up to who has more WAR and give it to that guy.  So, we'll see if AR can catch him.

I think @glenn__davisis right that team success will also factor in.  If Adley finishes strong and helps carry the O’s to the playoffs, that will influence the vote. But it’s likely that Seattle and Houston go to the playoffs too.  So I’d almost put it in the negative.  If the O’s fall short and Houston and Seattle are in, I think there’s very little chance that Adley finishes in the top two unless he just goes nuts in the final two months and passes Rodriguez and Peña in WAR by a significant margin.

I’d be shocked.
