Fangraphs’ top 50 free agents, with contract predictions

Fangraphs has posted its list of the top 50 free agents, which includes Ben Clemens’ contract predictions and their crowdsource median and mean contract predictions.   Here’s a few highlights of players who have been kicked around here (Clemens’ predictions first, median crowdsource second):

4.  deGrom 3/$141 mm, 3/$140 mm

5.  Verlander 2/$80 mm, 2/$70 mm

7.  Rodon 5/$120 mm, 5/$135 mm

12.  Abreu 2/$36 mm, 2/$30 mm

13.  Rizzo 2/$32 mm, 3/$54 mm

14.  Bassitt 3/$51 mm, 3/$48 mm

15. Eovaldi 3/$51 mm, 3/$42 mm

16.  Anderson 2/$30 mm, 2/$20 mm

18.  Senga 4/$56 mm, 4/$60 mm

At those prices, I’ll take Rodon and Senga.    That’s 40M per year for 2 pitchers instead of 1 (Verlander).

Agreed.  And if we miss on Verlander, there are quite a few solid plan B options:  Bassitt, Eovaldi, Taillon, Taijuan.

Brantley or Pederson would be cost-effective offensive improvements from the left side.

Any of the pitchers really I’m okay with. I think Rodon we’d actually have to spend more for to outbid another team. But I’m good with the costs on Bassit/Eovaldi/Anderson/Senga for that cost.

One of Bassit, Eovaldi, Anderson, Senga. Would prefer two years on Eovaldi. I also like Martin Perez although I think I am on an island on that one. 

I really don't like the DH idea but have to admit Abreu looks tempting if he doesn't get three years. Also Brantley's 125 OPS+, reminds me a bit of Harold Baines. I could see doing either of those provided we trade Hays or Mountcastle.

I liked this bit in Clemens' intro overview about a team's opportunity with 20 SP in the Top 50 to fill its 3rd-5th starters roles with above-average veterans in no time.

I think an option decline on Mike Minor is certain and on Chris Flexen is possible to add another couple low end guys, some of whom will be signing for much less than the $10mm extra.     Chris Archer and Zach Davies I believe already happened yesterday.

Archer and Spenser Watkins had almost identical seasons.FYI.

Honestly, with the exception of deGrom and Rodon, those contracts all look lower than I expected to see.

Rodon, Abreu, Bassitt, and Senga look good. Clevinger for 1 year at 9 million might be good value. The same with Kluber one year at 12 million.

I would definitely be interested in signing Bassit, Anderson, Senga and Brantley at these prices.
