“Orioles big game shopping & most believe it's exclusively rotation”

Not sure how I would feel about Carlos Rodon. On the one hand I'd be thrilled that the Orioles actually made a move like this - absolutely ecstatic. On the other hand it's Rodon, talk about bust potential. Hard not to love what he brought to the mound in 2022.

What would it take to outbid the Mets, Yankees, etc. ?

I don’t buy the rumor. This organization isn’t taking that plunge. And if they did check in on him, it’s not like they are going to put an offer out there that gets him.

They May be interested up to a certain year and dollar amount but he will far exceed what that likely number is.

I doubt it as well. And in the case of Rodon, I'd be glad to not sign him. No way he makes good on this next deal he's about to get.

A trade for a Pablo Lopez type seems likely.  The question is can they get Taillon or Bassitt on a 3 year deal?   Doesn’t seem likely in this market.   The Mets will sign at least two high profile pitchers.  Between the Mets, Dodgers, and Giants for Rodon and Verlander.  Senga probably goes to one of those teams as well.

The Giants and Yankees decision trees have those Aaron Judge-sized forks.     I guess these are the last few days if Orioles fans have any particular hope one way or the other about NYY Judge retention effort one way or the other for Adley and Gunnar's years together to still wonder before the outcome happens.

I think I'm pulling for Yankees keep.    A. more satisfying to beat the guy, B. back years liability.     Jackson Holliday will have $300mm dollars of Yankees to beat in 2030.

I think he looks like a pretty typical Orioles free agent pitcher.

I think he has both a higher floor and a higher ceiling than a Cobb, Gallardo, or Ubaldo, and could prove to be a shrewd addition for whoever signs him.

Rodon isn't choosing to come here over the Mets or Yankees, I don't care how much we overpay. The Orioles have to prove they're a playoff team with their young talent and mid tier signings before the big boys will consider coming here.

We still have to make players and agents believe we're the Rays: a smaller market team that nevertheless competes every year. Not there yet .

Texas, which won 68 games last year, just signed deGrom.

Texas also spent half a billion dollars last year and players know it's a team that will spend to keep the team competitive. It doesn't matter that it didn't work last year. The reputation has been established.

Also it's clearly going to be one of the few outliers in the off-season in terms of top players going to a losing team.

I'm not saying it's impossible, just very unlikely.

Also, just as an aside, that is a terrible contact lol.

He's getting paid by the New York Post, MLB Network, WFAN and Boras.

Texas has had a losing record the last six years, so spending “to keep the team competitive” hasn’t been working.  I think anyone who looked closely at the Orioles and Rangers would say we are in as good or better a position to compete in 2023 than they are.

This is largely a hypothetical discussion, because I doubt we’re going to outbid other teams for the top couple of remaining pitchers.  But I don’t think the pitchers would be reluctant to come if we paid the most money.

Texas has no state income tax.  I think that helps explain why they can sign big name free agents like DeGrom even though they have not established that they can be a playoff team.

Folks often ignore just how big a deal that is.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
