Jurickson Profar

Somewhat related, but I really hope Elias finds a way to trade Hays. That really frees up the roster for some more interesting options, a guy like Profar included, perhaps. The obvious guy is Stowers, but even someone like Vavra I find more exciting than Hays, just in terms of the quality of his ABs.

I think Santander is much more difficult to replace - a proven switch-hitting power bat - than Hays. But Hays still has value especially if someone thinks they can unlock another offensive gear for him.

I agree.  I would like to see Hays replaced out there.  He's too inconsistent and has broken my heart too much over the years waiting for a breakout.  He might be a little more interesting as a trade piece to another team.  I'd be OK with either as a part of a trade for SP improvement.  I think with one of Hays & Santander traded, even with a FA aquisition, Stowers can get 400 ABs between OF and DH, especially if the OF acquired can play 1B.

Profar had a slightly better year than Hays in 2022, but as between the two going forward, I’d prefer Hays.   He’s 3 years younger, he’s cheaper, and his career 6.4 rWAR is marginally higher than Profar’s 6.3 in less than half as many plate appearances.   I value OBP, and I know Profar’s is higher, but OBP isn’t everything.

Overall, I think Hays is somewhat underrated here because (1) his plate discipline isn’t good, and (2) he didn’t play that well the second half of last season.  Both those things are true, but Hays still has a lot of positives and some upside.

That said, would I move him in a deal for a starting pitcher?   Yes.

I'd love if we went into the season with the following IF set up:

Mountcastle 1B

Frazier 2B

Gunnar SS

Urias 3B

Westburg 3B, SS, 2B, 1B, DH

Ortiz SS in Norfolk

Norby 2B in Norfolk

We have some great IF depth, but I think we’d be selling low on Mateo and Santander because there isn’t much of a market for them after FA. Ideally, we’d just keep everyone, sign Wacha, then reassess where we are come trade deadline time. Our GM is risk adverse, and likes to deal from a position of leverage. I don’t think Pablo Lopez is a guy that will make Elias give away a lot of value. That’s risky.

I like this plan... but we need to keep in mind that there are going to be a lot of really good AAA players banging on the door very soon..

Curious as to why you would think there isn't a market for Mateo-there a certainly a lot of teams looking for a SS now.

I’d rather have one of Wells/Voth in the rotation and not have to trade the package of Santander, Mateo, plus, for Pablo Lopez. That’s giving up a lot of WAR for parts of 3-4 years for Pablo Lopez. I just don’t get the fascination with Pablo Lopez when there are other options likely available on the trade market. For Example Eric Lauer from the Brewers.

I like your thinking (and still think they should trade Santander and one of the MIs), but Profar isn't going to come anywhere close to replacing Santander's numbers. I also think he played a bit over his head last season and whoever signs him will be selling/buying high. I'd personally pass and just roll with one of our young bats if we trade Santander.

I’ve been thinking that Tommy Pham or one of the remaining 1B/DH types are a good fit. Profar probably wants everyday ABs, and I don’t think we’d give him the money he wants.

Yeah, hard pass on Tommy Pham. My personal favorite comment in the below Reddit thread was "I'll take him back, if he doesn't get stabbed again."

Profar is still out there.  Any chance he takes a reasonable one year contract to take advantage of OPACY’s friendly RF wall?  The guy still has a few good years ahead of him. One big year could set him up nicely for one final contract.   I like his skill set on our roster and gives us additional depth when/if someone gets hurt/traded.

It might have made sense before we foolishly signed Frazier.  But now, nah.

Signing Profar would have been a better move than signing Frazier, but now signing him would just be redundantly redundant.
