If you’re ever going to play them, it has to be against lefties — so you’re going to see them together a lot.

I'm more than fine to never have Mateo starting again.   His role just be a pinch runner/defensive replacement only at this point.   With Gunnar, Westburg, Urias and Frazier and Ortiz waiting in the wings, Mateo should not start.   But if you feel forced to start him on occasion,  don't do it when we already have another black home in the lineup in McCann.

Well gosh, they didn’t do too much to back me up on this one the first time through — they saw 6 pitches, at least? 😂

Nope, but they made up for it the next time up.  Shocked me,  but happy to be wrong this time.

Thank you.  Each had a huge hit in the 4th.

Sure did.  And Mateo just booted a ball to allow the Rays to tie.  Should have been an out, and us going to the 9th with a 1 run lead.  Frankly Mateo's defense has really regressed, and his bat still sucks, even with the nice hit today.  If he can't play top notch defense he shouldn't be playing or likely even on the roster.

100% and it's ridiculous they didn't give him an error. That ball was hit directly at him. Absolutely heartbreaking. Fortunately they just took the lead again. C'mon fellas, let's hang on for the "W"!

I do trust Henderson defensively, especially in a big spot, more than Mateo now.  There was also a play towards the hole where he throws on the run and bounces the throw and the runner was safe.   Henderson plants and guns him out IMO.

I agree completely, and I certainly think a good, on the line throw without bouncing, gets that out that Mateo missed.  Overall I used to get keeping Mateo on the roster for his defense, but with the guys we have now (and, frankly, Ortiz in the minors) Mateo just isn't good enough to keep around IMO.  I doubt he gets cut/traded, but I wish he would.

That ball was 113 MPH off the turf.  That's not an error.

Whoever would have thought that Mateo’s defense would fall back some? I mean, that’s a complete surprise!

He's basically played about 95% as well as he did last season in the field.  I think everyone would have conceded that was a possibility.

I didn't see the first play, but the second play, in the 8th, was not only not an error, and it's ridiculous to suggest it was (see other thread), but that's a 113 mph short hop to the backhand side.  I think even Gold Glovers don't make that play every time, or even most of the time.
