He looks fine at the plate and even though he isn’t hitting lefties yet, he doesn’t look overmatched. He is hanging in there well. He has a 214 BABiP despite an exit velo at 85%. Last thing

Mateo has over 1.000 OPS against both righties and lefties this season. He needs to be out there every day.

Urias has a higher career OPS against righties and lefties than Frazier. His 2023 OPS (.760, 114 OPS+) is about .100 points higher than Frazier's (.663, 85 OPS+)

Gunnar needs to get opportunities against righties and lefties to develop his game. We're 20-9 despite his numbers against LHP (which, to be fair, have only been 30 PA and he's walked 8 of those).

 

 

I think we all would like to see, but alas, Elias has to ride out his $8 million investment for awhile. It's hard to argue with a 20-9 record, but you do have to wonder how much better this team would be without Frazier and with Westburg or Ortiz on this roster instead. 

I respect a lot of what Elias has done, but no one will ever convince me that signing Frazier was the right thing to do with the talent he already had on hand. 

I do think Henderson needs to play everyday at 3B with the occasional day off and the occasional SS day when Mateo needs a day off.

I think he believes in himself a little too much.  He must have off-the-charts vision.  His ability to recognize pitches & locations is really darn near second to none and he’s only 21.  Once he starts tattooing a couple mistakes, pitchers are going to get even more precise/conscious of his abilities and make more mistakes/miss more often.  It’s just a patience game with this guy.  He’s going to go off.  
 

The LHP issues are a little concerning but I’m willing to give home a little lead way.  
 

I don’t think he needs to be sent down or suggest he ought to, but if he were I’d be OK because he’d be replaced with Westburg or Ortiz and I believe in all their abilities.  I think we look back at this at end of the year as a blip on the radar & Gunnar, Westburg, & Ortiz have all made significant contributions.

To me Gunner has been way too passive early in counts.  My guess is he is really trying to adopt the team hitting concept and he is probably over thinking instead of just looking for a strike and letting it fly.  My guess is the walks will come down and his average will start going up if he becomes more aggressive.  If he continues this though you could see a point where he may lose confidence and may need a reset in the minors.  

I have little doubt he will figure it out, just not sure how long the process may take.

As little as Henderson has hit it’s amazing how much respect he gets from the pitchers.  He has a great eye but he also doesn’t get a lot to hit.  So far, when he does he’s been mostly missing it.  I like his swing a lot better now compared to earlier in the season where it looked like he was trying to muscle up.   Still feels like he’s over swinging a bit.

      I'm not disregarding his past performance, but in general recent performance is more relevant if it's a decent sample size.  140 PAs is a pretty high number.  It's been pretty clear for awhile now that what he was once good at he's not good at right now.  I'd rather see Kjerstad bat against lefties than Slater at this point.

      Today was, thankfully, the last games vs the NL this year…barring a WS run of course. The Os finish 19-26 (that’s a sub 70 win% seasons) vs the NL and were outscored by 42 runs.     That means vs the AL he has outscored them by about 115 runs and are 24 games over 500.

      I disagree Mayo is one of the reasons the Orioles have not hit well.  Emmanuel Rivera, who has hit well with an .879 OPS since he joined the O's, has gotten the playing time over Mayo.

      I was sort taking that as a fait accompli. Signing expensive long-term free agent deals for one dimensional sluggers heading into their 30s definitely does not seem like Elias's style, especially when an extra high draft pick (and accompanying extra bonus pool money) is the reward for not doing so.

      Game 153, Sept. 19 Lots of notable defensive plays today.   Kjerstad made two excellent catches, one going back and towards the RCF alley that (per Kevin Brown) was a 50% probability catch, and another going back to the wall near the corner and making the catch at close to full speed.   Holliday snared a line drive at the top of his leap, and also made a nice backhand running catch of a soft fly into medium RF. Mullins made a diving catch in the 7th on a sinking liner that he got a great jump on.   In the 9th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Heliot hit a liner in the RCF gap that carried much further than it first appeared it would.   Mullins and Slater dove for it simultaneously and Slater actually gloved it for a second before it popped out while Slater landed on Mullins.  Luckily, the two base runners totally misread the play, and after Slater quickly scrambled to his feet and threw the ball in, the runner originally on 2B scored but the runner on 1st only advanced to 2B, and the batter had to stop at first.  The O’s were able to keep any further runs from scoring. One thing I’ve noticed about Manny Rivera is that he’s very slow charging bunts and slow rollers/choppers. He handled one bunt and one chopper in front of him today and both times the runner beat his throw rather easily, something that has happened a lot when Rivera has manned 3B.   I’m more than ready to have Urias -and/or Westburg back at the hot corner.

      Don’t know what happened to him on here but I did meet him and some others from The Sun forums at the park on Matt Wieters first game as an Oriole. If I recall correctly his name was Patrick.  He seemed like a good dude but he did have his face painted and was wearing those big hulk hands…which did strike me as a little odd for a grown man but to each his own.
