If you look at his career before last year it is possible that last year was an outlier in which he could command his pitches.

It felt to me like he had very good command the first couple of weeks this season.  But it’s been missing for a while now.

The current situation brings me back to when Jorge Julio was our closer and BJ Ryan was our setup man.  Eventually they switched roles, but I was never completely convinced that the closer role is actually more important than the setup guy who often pitches the 8th but fairly often comes in to snuff out a fire in the 7th and then stays in for the 8th.  Right now, I have more confidence in Cano than Bautista, but I’m not in a hurry to see a role change, for that reason.

Not really excusing the wildness, but it felt like Adley was a little off blocking after he got clocked by that foul tip.  He missed some pitches in the dirt that he usually gets to after that happened.

That said all our relievers couldn't really hit the broad side of a barn at times.

I think AR could use a day off tomorrow and then get the extra rest day Thursday.

Cano is the more trusted reliever, but that allows us to bring him in during big spots and not wait for save situations in the 9th.

Bautista is laboring through innings, but he’s hitting them out.

Colonel Perez doesn’t look like he’s getting back to last season’s form. Hopefully, Tate or Givens, can give us another really reliable set up man.

I thought The Mountain looked the best tonight that he’s looked in a while.  Came in with runners on 1st and 3rd, nobody out, and struck out the side.  Threw a ton of well-spotted fastballs and one devastating splitter for the second strike three.  He’s still not getting the splitter where he wants it a lot of the time, but that one was encouraging.

Best fastball command in awhile.

Wondering if the warm weather affected him. I think Tony mused at one point that the cold weather might be affecting him previously.

In any event; he looked great last night and if he could keep that up with the way Cano has looked then we can basically make games a 7 inning game for the most part. We have the lead after 7… look out.

I think the warmer weather has definitely helped the big guy. I was at the game on Friday and it was a muggy 85 and sunny. He made his slow walk to the bullpen after the first inning in a hoodie. You know he was roasting. Then he had his best stuff in awhile.

Not a coincidence. Warm weather good. Now we just gotta rest the big guy.

Bautista had the best splitter he’s shown in weeks in last night’s game.  His fastball command actually wasn’t as sharp as on Friday night, but it was great to see the splitter working.

The fastball command doesn’t have to be great if the splitter is working well.
