1/20 Game Thread - Virginia

When we aren't getting fast break points our offense is really ugly. No post presence and only one guy who can beat you off the dribble is a bad combo.

On the bright side it's nice to see Dinosaur Gregory getting some good minutes. Also, Sugar Sean Mosely is such a smart player for a freshman. He does all the little things.

UVa has played much, much better in the 2nd half. They were turning the ball over so much in the first half they couldnt get anything going.

Now they are pounding the ball to Scott which is exactly what they should be doing all the time.

He is a really good player.

Another quiet game for Landesberg. So far.

Well, looks like we won't get the W, but can't expect that on the road with the sort of team we have this season.

That said, I can't tell you how excited I am for the future of this team. We only lose Diane from this team, and Scott has really started to show how good of a player he can be. Zeglinski has been inconsistent, but has shown flashes of being a good PG. Tucker is a great college inside-out player. Farrakhan and Jones are both streaky shooters who can roll when they are on, but also can kill you when they are off. Sene is also still a freshmen, but looks pretty comfortable on the defensive end.

Landesberg has now had two straight pretty sub-par games, but it's gonna take a lot more than that for me to get down on him, considering he was incredible in just about every other one this season.

Love what Coach Leitao is doing down in Charlottesville.

Nice job by the Terps tonight to hold on. I gotta say, I do usually root for them when they arent playing us. Like seeing the non-NC teams win as much as possible.

Except for the Hokies. :P

Landon Milbourne is absolutely the unsung hero of this team. He's been doing a great job doing an absolutely thankless job of having to be the only reliable "big" man the Terps have.

The inside presence of this team is really a joke, plus we clearly have almost no killer instinct.

I'm really pissed off that this team isn't 4-0 in the ACC and 15-2 overall. We very easily could be and be in great position for the rest of the season.

Agreed 100%. Milbourne has been incredible for you guys this year, and if you guys had any sort of big man, he would be even more effective. REally like him for you guys.

Mack, what did you think of Scott for UVa tonight? Trying to get as many non-biased opinions as I can, because he has impressed the hell out of me all year.

I think if he was on the Terps we'd be a top-20 team.

I don't know if he's a superstar, dominating inside against Maryland isn't aying much, but he was leading the ACC in offensive rebounding coming in, right? He's incredibly active on the interior. He's definitely, at the very least, a legit ACC caliber starting big man. A guy who could play for any team.

It's pretty remarkable how much the interest in this program has died down. I was at the game tonight and there were a ridiculous amount of empty seats. I know it's UVA, but it's still an ACC game nevertheless. Even the students weren't into it much. Pretty sad.

At least we got the W.

Yes, he leads the conference in offensive rebounding. So aggressive on the boards.

That was where I was getting at, basically. Watching both of these teams so closely, I agree that if Scott was on this Maryland team they would probably be right with Clemson as far as being the 4th best team in the conference this year.

    • I doubt the O’s will look past it, given that Oakland just beat the Yankees 2 out of 4 in the Bronx.
    • You know life is good when there are threads like these. Burnes + our lineup tonight. Wow
    • In 26 games, the A’s have scored 4+ runs only 9 times, and 5+ only 3 times.  The O’s have been held under 4 runs only 4 times and under 5 runs only 10 times in 24 games.
    • I think of it as a "trap series" because it would be easy to look past it for the Yankees coming to town on Monday.
    • I'll accept that! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, that's kind of a carte blanche to keep on about Jigger Statz and the '22 Cubs. I knew I'd heard Statz' name, and it's because he spent about 18 years playing for the Los Angeles Angels in the old Pacific Coast League when it was pretty close to being a 3rd major before the actual majors expanded to the west coast. He played off and on for them from the age of 22 to 28, then every year from age 31-44. He had 3356 hits in the PCL, hit .315, almost 600 doubles. Many, many players in that era had long careers in the PCL or the American Association or International League. A lot of them every bit as good as guys who had 15-year MLB careers. This was the same timeframe where the Orioles were winning seven straight IL titles with teams that certainly could have finished mid-pack in the AL/NL. Other '22 Cubs included Hack Miller, who looked like Hack Wilson or a fire hydrant (take your pick), and played many years for Oakland in the PCL. Zeb Terry played four years for the Angels. Ray Grimes had almost 4000 minor league PAs. Hooks Cotter played 10+ years in the high minors. Joe Klugman spent a decade in the Southern Association. That would have been a great era to follow, with 16 MLB teams, but countless other really competitive teams just a notch below. And this was mostly before affiliations took hold, so these teams were all trying their darnedest to win. They weren't just 3-month stopovers for the Cards and Dodgers' best prospects. If you were in Baltimore in 1922 and you ask 100 kids who their team was, it was overwhelmingly going to be the Orioles. Not the Senators or Yanks or whatever, but the home town team.
    • At home it's often the only way to avoid a tag, even sliding through and reaching back has injury risk.  Players didn't go head first in the old days because they weren't as friendly as today-you would get kicked, spiked or a hard tag in the kisser-also no batting helmets as a shield to the throw.  The bags were also softer and easier to maintain contact with.
    • Holy hell what is Miami doing to their pitchers
