Honest question to you (and others that think she's fine)....

Have you tried listening on the radio?  To either her or Garceau?

On TV I don't think they're very good but I don't really care because I can see the action.  But while I respect everyone's opinion I don't understand how people could think that either are acceptable on the radio.

I really don't care that much. I honestly don't.

On the radio she is fine, on TV I think she is fine. Joe and Fred were the best, John Miller has been gone for so long I just don't care anymore. Gary Thorne was great but he had his problems too. The teams we have right now, all permutations, are various levels of meh.

I don't care that she said "blank player out to center field," I mean, I know what she means because I understand context.

Ben MacDonald is an edible away from sounding like Boomhauer up there, and that is fine.

I still dont understand how Bordick was here for 9 seasons and was atrocious. Glad he's gone but jeez that was a long time.

Anytime Bordick is mentioned my mind automatically goes back to him still calling Chris Davis "the crusher" even though he was hitting .100

So basically, there's really nothing an announcer could do to be "not fine" to you?

I just want to know what's happening in the game, in a way that makes sense when I can't watch.

I mean, I said I don't really care? So there it is?

I've never listened to her on the radio and thought "i don't know what is going on," apparently you have so there we go?

Is she the best PBP person I have ever heard? No. Am I starting multiple internet conversations over it? No.

I tend to watch on TV but found myself listening to a few radio broadcasts recently. I've become acutely aware of when Melanie is doing the radio PBP because without fail, there will be some obviously needed piece of information that isn't being provided. Often this is something like the ball/strike result of the last pitch, or perhaps whether a runner made it to second or third.

It's really unacceptable for a major league organization to have this be an ongoing problem, IMO. I don't place all of the blame on Melanie, as it seems obvious to me that there would be some producer listening in who would notice these things, then coach her on them.

I don't really care for her otherwise, but she's no worse than Rob Long for me in the studio or Garceau on TV. I can live with that.

I'd still rather listen to her than Bordick.

Completely agree with this.

Davis is due to break out of his slump countless times after Davis had been below replacement level for 3 years.

No problem if you don't care.  Different strokes for different folks.

As I said earlier, I think as a whole we've been pretty restrained in the criticism this year, so we need a release every now and again.  We saw this thread and the Giants thread pop-up recently I think because she's been doing TV and people have been exposed to her more.  I have to listen to a lot of games on the radio because of my kids' schedules, and while I've no doubt been spoiled by Jon Miller and Joe Angel, there's no reason the Orioles should have Newman or Garceau doing PBP.  They can both be great as studio hosts.

    • No one is trading anything close to that for Crochet. But I agree..spend money, not prospects.
    • That's some high standards.  Sinker ball types are always going to have higher FIPs and lower K rates.  The truth is, Quintana is probably out of our price range.  That price range is probably no more than the standard Lyles/Gibson/Kimbrel/Frazier price range until otherwise seen.   Back to Quintana, I think he's the type of guy that if healthy could be a real weapon for us with our home ballpark and a home playoff game if we ever get deep into a series.
    • That's really the role/opening for next year that we need.  A RHH OF that could play some CF preferably.  Although, I'd lean more to and offensive minded portion of that versus the ability to play CF.  LF is big though at home. I think it's a role that Elias fills through trade, waivers, or maybe even a competition of milb deal types.  Like a RH Sam Hilliard type.
    • Yeah, he would be good in the Austin Slater role if he was willing to accept it. Not sure that he would be quite as good defensively in CF, given that he has played fewer than 100 innings total in CF since 2021. I highly doubt that he is ready to accept a role as a platoon player though, given that he is not yet 30, and he was an above average starter by rWAR from 2021-23. I doubt he is tendered a contract, given his $6M 2024 salary. His best bet is probably to sign a one year deal with a team that doesn't hope to compete, to attempt to reestablish himself as an everyday player, while the team that signs him can hope to flip him at the trade deadline.
    • I agree. He’d be a great regular season fit in Cinncy’s ballpark. Maybe that confidence of knowing he can hit the ball out to LF at home covers up his other decencies.  As for Crochet… can’t we just resign Burnes?  Crochet would probably cost Holliday, Basallo, and Mayo. Didn’t the deadline teach us the cost of pitching? I’m for trading Mountcastle. I’d hope we can surround the young hitters with a Burnes led staff with adding a vet bat to the DH/1B mix. Other than that, I think we will roll with what we have. And we should.
    • Hays will want to start somewhere. He shouldn't start for us. We don't want him sitting on the bench looking dejected while Kjerstad and Cowser are mashing bombs onto Eutaw Street.
