Take a pencil or pen (preferably clean :) ) put it lengthwise between your teeth and drink water. My history teacher in high school said it's an old Asian technique that creates a vacuum and gets rid of hiccups. I learned this in 1983 and I've never had it not work since.

I've been using that technique for about 60 years, usually with a chopstick or swizzle stick. It always works, but sometimes I've had to repeat it.

Interesting article from 2021 about bad baserunning in the game and its cause.  Looks like things will probably be shifting back to valuing good baserunning, but that's going to take time.

As for having the 1B or 3B Coach tell you when to go, the article's author quotes Phil Bradley, stating it should be more instinctual:

Quote

"Our kids on the Little League level, even through high school, are literally told when to run, when to stop. They are never left on their own to trust their own instincts, to know when a ball might drop," Bradley said. "It's like, 'I'm not going to run unless the first-base coach tells me to go.' If you are waiting for the coach to tell you, it's too late. I've talked to coaches. We need to trust our kids to make decisions on their own. Find ways in practice. Don't have base coaches in practice. And tell the kids why you don't have base coaches in practice. Play situations where the players can figure it out on their own."

According to the article, you can't really blame the players.  The game had devalued good baserunning due to the "three true outcomes," and rule changes designed to bring stolen bases back may raise its value, but players will need to be taught, and that's a big challenge.

Probably too long a post for the game thread :D

Great--thanks. I'll try it.

Kremer only at 77 but it seems every time he has gotten the lead he gives it up. Probably need to get another inning out of him with the bullpen gassed

I saw Columbe keep throwing but I was wrong. May be batter to batter this inning. SEATTLE has a bunch of RHH on bench.

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
