As many solid hitting prospects as we keep throwing out there, one of them is bound to become an elite hitter. Who knows if it’s any of the current 4, but eventually we’re gonna land on an elite bat.

I agree with this, I'd honestly rather they give them tons of play time and if the record keeps plummeting, so be  it, let these kids get accustomed to hitting and playing up here to pay real dividends next year.

It was a long overdue promotion for CC but I am really encouraged by the move.  It’s only one game but CC and JW with the current roster construction improve this team so much. It showed tonight.

The baby birds may well be on the verge of being scary good. Cowser, Adley, Gunnar and JW are just the beginning.

By now you know he's been assigned #17.  I think anything below 59 is a keeper with the exception of Cano wearing #78.  Although we have seen where players ride out the current year and get assigned a lower number the next.

Tyler Wells, 68.  But he was a Rule 5 guy and he's 6'8".  So own it.

Personally, I don’t think Cowser’s call-up was long overdue.  His first minor league game was August 2, 2021.   Less than two years from there to the majors.   He’s the third position player in his class to make the majors, the other two being Henry Davis and Matt McLain.  I feel he earned his promotion and while it couid have happened a few weeks ago, “long overdue” is an exaggeration IMO.

The promotion of Westburg, on the other hand, was long overdue.

  • 3 weeks later...

I expected Cowser to struggle as he has at nearly every level initially.  Fangraphs pointed out today that "...Cowser has hit just .122/.302/.146 through his first 53 PA and has yet to barrel a single ball."  Longenhagen has never really liked him that much.  Thinks not enough power and strikes out too much.   But it is interesting that he hasn't barreled a single ball.  Of note, Westburg has only barreled one ball.  Gunnar has 24 barrels.  Ohtani has 53.

    • Because I believe how it works is they project FIP and then adjust based on team defense and park factors to project ERA. Since we’re talking about a trade, the context-specific elements of defense and park factors are less relevant. The projections have been shown to be more highly correlated with future performance than ERA or ERA estimators such as FIP.
    • Wait …what . Cedric has hit for .271 and .290 in his career. And I could also live with the .258 he hit a couple seasons ago.
    • I'm happy that I made it through yesterday intact but look ahead...there are thousands of viruses floating around out there, and it might thunderstorm this weekend...I feel there's a solid chance I get struck by lightning at least twice...my "health" will likely be short lived...but I'm happy to be alive...for now..
    • Pittsburgh signed Keller thru 2028.  As much as I would like to trade for him, I think they plan to build their rotation around Keller and Skenes.  Keller is a #2/3 with ace upside.  If their GM would think to move him, they would no doubt want a package starting w/ Mayo/Basallo or Holliday, fair or unfair.
    • We've talked about this many times over the years, but I'll never quite get the kind of mass hysteria narratives that sometimes spread around MVP or other award voting. In 1996 ARod was obviously a better overall hitter than Gonzalez, definitely a better baserunner, and while Rodriguez was a good shortstop Gonzalez was a below-average corner outfielder. There was no WAR at the time, but retroactively this is reflected in ARod winning that metric about 9-3. But as often happens someone runs with one crazy idea or the other and they give the award to the clearly worse player. Makes me think it's usually just a way to sell more newspapers with controversy.
    • Right …would anybody be for us picking up Flaherty again? I know I wouldn’t
    • I worry about Keller ….pitching well then goes to a new team and pitches at the 4 ERA he was last season.
