Ambitious Articles for the Hangout

I'm currently brainstorming a project to post on the Hangout where we examine the best seasons from some of baseball's best players every. Included will be details about the person and what they had to deal with as the season wore on, stats, world events at the time, and perhaps enrichment from pictures and personal letters or memoirs written in this year.

So far, I have:

Cy Young (1892)

Ty Cobb (1911)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/cobbty01.shtml

Walter Johnson (1913)

Roger Hornsby (1925)

George Herman Ruth (1927)

Joe DiMaggio (1939)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dimagjo01.shtml

Mickey Mantle (1957)

***

I'm open to suggestions. I thought about including:

Frank Robinson (1966)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/robinfr02.shtml

I dunno if his season fits with the magnitude of some of these other players, but then again, it was a different era. Feel free to add a player and if you are interested in getting to know some of the game's greats, PM me if you are willing to write up your own well researched and well written article. I looked mainly at the dead-ball and classical eras, but am open to others as well. I'd like to avoid the steroids era if I could.

One of the reasons I'd like to do this is that by examining these players we can become more intimate with the game while seeing how it has changed over time as well. For example, Ty Cobb's 1911 season was amazing while being very different from Mickey Mantle's 1957 season. We can compare Koufax to Johnson, Young to Palmer, and so forth.

The ultimate goal of this is to create an enriching article that will benefit the hangout and ourselves as we learn about the world the player was in as well as the game at that time. Again, let me know if you are interested or would like to see a player added.

Just a question, but why 1892 for Cy Young vs. 1901?

He pitched fewer games and fewer innings, but the rest of the numbers look much better.

Not a criticism; just curious :)

I felt that his 1892 season was the more impressive, but I did wrestle with it.
