My Thoughts on Today’s Game

The team is fine with pressure.  You don’t win so many close games even your nit able to handle pressure.  However you play a lot of close games your gonna lose some as well.  Mullins, Hicjs, and Henderson will give you good at bats and that will hurt.  I am hoping they have Ortiz up here by this time next week or he is moved in a trade for a bigger piece.

The Phillies are a good team, obviously.  Not surprised we lost with that O's lineup and a lefty on the mound.  We could have won two out of three if Bautista had closed last night, but oh well.

Bradish is not going to pitch great every game, and he's not the problem with this team.  We need another bullpen arm and if possible another starter.  We also need a bat, preferably in the outfield.

Gunnar is the main SS right now.

They want Ortiz playing everyday at SS right now instead of being a bench player in Baltimore.

Ortiz is only a "bench player" in Hyde's mind, ME can override that as he did with Westburg. Urias/ Gunnar at 3B, Ortiz/Gunnar at SS, Westburg/Frazier is your best defensive and offensive combo. Ortiz is your starting SS next year and Gunnar's future is as a GG 3B. Better to get settled now and let them acclimate. We will NOT get the "difference-making" pitching and hitting we would need to be favored to make the WS. ME and SigBot won't do it, they believe in draft, trade, and develop IMO.

Winning this one would have help make up for last nights give away... but yet another game with just 8 hits.. 19 out of the last 30.  We do need pitching but 8 hits isn't going to make it out of round one of the playoffs. We need a bat.. internal or otherwise.

First off if Elias wanted Ortiz playing everyday up here he would be already.

Gunnar is an everyday player. That leaves Westburg, Urias and Frazier for 2 spots with Mateo as a back up. Ortiz would in the Mateo role right now and not playing all the time.

The pressure is different when there is more on the line, i.e. division lead and holding on to that, expecting to make the playoffs and winning most games.  Having low external expectations and low % chance of making the playoffs is very different than the current state of things.  It is a very young team with limited experience playing playoff games.

    • This is how.  Baseball America. Draft Prospects Ranked #364 prospect in 2023 draft   School: Liberty Source: 4YR Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted  Age At Draft: 21.2  Gibson made a strong early impression at Liberty by putting up a 3.32 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 21 walks in 65 innings as a freshman in 2021. His second season wasn’t as strong. With 72 strikeouts in 56 innings, his strikeout rate was actually up year over year, but otherwise, the numbers paint a grimmer picture. His ERA ballooned to 6.75, his hits allowed per nine innings went from 7.1 to 10.1 and his walks allowed per nine innings went from 2.9 to 4.8. Gibson didn’t pitch at all for Liberty in the 2023 season, but threw in the Cape Cod League during the summer. He struggled through his first four appearances, posting a 13.50 ERA in 10 innings, with 12 strikeouts and eight walks. Gibson pitched around 89 and got his fastball up to 92, but he struggled to land his secondaries, which include a downer curveball in the mid 70s, a low-80s slider and a mid-80s changeup. There’s arm talent here, but his inconsistencies, lack of playing time and history with arm injuries in 2022 could make him a complicated draft target.
    • I’m sure it’s not easy being asked some of the questions he gets. This is someone who started in the All Star Game last year. He knows he has had a down year.
    • Glenn, you’re a very good poster but apparently a bad Googler.  No problemo.  This was reported April 26. Injuries: MASN’s Steve Melewski reported that Bowie’s Zach Peek (right shoulder inflammation) and Aberdeen’s Reed Trimble (right hamstring discomfort) were both placed on the injured list yesterday.
    • This is an article targeted toward Pirates fans but profiles a Korean reliever recently let go by the Marlins. Groundball pitcher with an option. Numbers look Tate-ish. Best of all, he has an option. https://rumbunter.com/posts/pittsburgh-pirates-should-pursue-this-recently-dfa-reliever-woo-suk-go-01hz5msrvqq4
    • I agree. I think in general relievers will be the big items this July.
    • Perhaps Suarez will be the Orioles version of Ramiro Mendoza.
    • What about Crochet? White Sox are a bunch of players short of competing.
