Big miss there: imagine the 1-2 punch of Manny and Chris Davis for another five years.

This was never an outcome that could come to be.

Extending Manny became absolutely impossible because we gave Chris Davis that ridiculous contract.  If the team had decided that they were going to gather enough money to make a run at signing Manny, Chris Davis would have walked.

Sorry. I was kidding -- trying to make the point in a different way that surrounding Manny with the rest of that 2018-2021 team would have been pretty pointless.

But, you know, it's possible, though unlikely, that if he had a lot less to spend PA would have signed Davis for a lot less since nobody else seemed too interested in him.

This Chris Davis debacle is probably Peter Angelos' legacy. It really handcuffed this franchise for years. Luckily they seem to have begun a recovery.

Little bit, yes.

I admit if Gunnar is a SS and Mayo is a 1B, I kind of just want to know who is Milt Pappas so he can be the Frobby, next generation, guy.    He'll help Colton Cowser not to hit too polite.

As always the trade transaction transforms his future compensation to something more sensible.    For the market we're in.

It won't happen but I could live with being in one of the universes where Jackson Holliday is traded for Soto, Machado, Hader, Snell and $100 million dollars.

I do think sometime in the next 3 days to 3 years Mike Elias is going to make what Billy Beane characterized to an admiring Michael Lewis as a "bleepin' A" trade.

Also, how different is out team today had we signed Manny to a huge contract?

Would we, in hindsight, want to find out?

I would have rather paid Manny than paying Chris Davis. There was always something peculiar about Chris's failed drug tests and suspension to me, long before his batting woes ever started showing up. For me that was a big red flag.

I like Manny Machado and I look back fondly at his time in an Orioles uniform. I don't care what anybody else thinks. Manny was and is a great player.

    • I’m not against getting Crochet, but I see him as more of a trade that’s looking into 2025 and beyond. Crochet is likely to get rested in the second half or even put on the shelf in September.  If it’s about getting pitchers to help with a deep postseason run then Elias will have to make additional moves.  Crochet is already near double the amount of innings he’s ever pitched over an entire season. I don’t see it likely he pitches 200 innings this season after his injury history.
    • What I have heard about the batter's eye is that it is made of some kind of mesh and at certain time of day, light shines through it.   This was from a Darrell Hernaiz interview a couple of years ago.   Also, the lights aren't that good, per Hernaiz.
    • This is probably a good pivot if nothing else but the "better" pitchers on the market don't pan out. Connor Norby would seem like a player the Cubs would want. If we are willing to take on the salary. Do the Cubs really think they are contending in 2025 or 26? Hell, maybe they can add in Drew Smyly. Especially if DC looks iffy to actually make it back this season.
    • ??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either. It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.  You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...
    • I don't see any issue with an innings limit. Let him pitch the next two months as an opener. Ramp him up again in September. Let him loose in October.
    • Crochet in June. 36 IP, 27 H, 6 BB, 56 K Doesn’t look like he’s getting tired to me.   Innings limit?   Unless Crochet is asking for a limit, I say there is no limit. Did someone put an innings limit on 23 Chris Sale (78 to 180), 39 yo Verlander (0 to 175) or a 23 yo Jim Palmer (0 to 181)?
